Hiking trails around Greffeil

The Maison-du-sorcier loop is 8 km long; the shorter option is 4 km. The loop takes about three hours to walk, while the shorter option takes about one hour and 30 minutes. The trail is marked with a yellow line and a green circle. Check the trail markings on site; local trail conditions may change.

A marked hike from Greffeil leads to the Maison du sorcier. You can start at the village church or at the car park on the D56.

The 3 km Sentier des Plos runs along the Lauquet and passes through the Forêt des Plos. Signs along the way provide information about the local fauna and flora. This trail brings together a defined distance, a riverside route, a forest passage and nature-related themes.

The Escoubille loop is 10 km long; a shorter option is 6 km. The route first follows a ridge, then passes through the forest and along the Lauquet. Along the way, you pass the ruins of Escoubille. In terms of length, the Escoubille loop is 2 km longer than the Maison-du-sorcier loop; the shorter options also differ by 2 km, at 6 km instead of 4 km. The route descriptions have different emphases: the Sentier des Plos features signs about fauna and flora, while Escoubille offers a ridge, forest and ruins.

Forest and natural surroundings

The Forêt des Plos is in the commune of Greffeil, covers around 40 hectares and borders the Lauquet. Trees growing there include pines, firs, holm oaks, downy oaks, strawberry trees and Montpellier maples. These different tree species give the forest a distinctive natural character; the Sentier des Plos passes through it.

Greffeil is part of the 115.23-hectare ZNIEFF “Rivière du Lauquet et ruisseaux de Guinet et de l’Alberte”. The name refers not only to the Lauquet, but also to the Guinet and Alberte streams. This means the area’s natural character can be understood through its waterways as well as its forest.

Historic structures and history

The Church of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte is a listed structure dating from the 14th century. The Pont sur le Lauquet is a three-arch bridge from the early 18th century. Their dates establish a clear contrast in age, and the bridge is also specifically described by its three arches. Together with the ruins of Escoubille, these structures complement the natural features of the hiking trails with local heritage.

When planning your trip, you can weigh up different aspects: the walking time and distance of the Maison-du-sorcier loop, the signs about fauna and flora along the Sentier des Plos, or the course of the Escoubille loop with its ridge and ruins. These details make Greffeil a tangible destination, even though not all the trails need to have the same character.
