There are two distinct ways to explore Lagrasse: through the history of its architecture and abbey, and through the Corbières landscape, with its hiking trails and the Orbieu. In the medieval town, narrow cobbled lanes, historic buildings and crafts are part of the scene; the surrounding area is well suited to hiking and cycling. The market and the seasonal swimming area may also influence your choice of travel dates.

The Abbey and the Medieval Townscape

The former Benedictine Abbey of Sainte-Marie d’Orbieu in Lagrasse is a protected historic monument. Its monastic buildings include architectural features dating from the pre-Romanesque period to the 18th century. The public tour covers eleven areas, including the monks’ dormitory, the cellars and the bakery. The abbey is divided into public and private areas, which can be visited independently of one another.

The medieval abbey palace includes the Saint-Barthélemy Chapel and its vestibule, with remarkably well-preserved decorations. The lapidary museum contains casts and Romanesque sculptures by the Master of Cabestany. The visit therefore takes in both the monastery rooms and architectural details and sculpture.

The Église Saint-Michel also represents a clearly dated building phase: it was built between 1340 and 1350 and designated a historic monument in 1925. The medieval town of Lagrasse features narrow, cobbled lanes and architecture from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Pont Vieux connects the town centre with the abbey; the bridge was mentioned as early as 1303.

The Maison du Patrimoine offers another perspective on architecture, with its painted wooden ceilings from the 14th century. Together with the lanes and abbey buildings, it lets you explore architecture from different contexts, rather than reducing the town to a single building.

The Market, Crafts and the Orbieu

A market is held on Saturdays in Lagrasse’s covered market hall. If you would like to plan your visit around the market, check the date before you travel. Local crafts include jewellery, ceramics, leather goods, lute making and embroidery. Shops and workshops are devoted to these crafts; individual businesses may change.

The Orbieu flows through Lagrasse. A swimming area is set up in the river opposite the abbey in July and August. It is seasonal, so if you are planning to visit, check the current swimming conditions in advance.

Hiking Trails and the Corbières Landscape

The area around Lagrasse is well suited to hiking and cycling, with views of the village and the Corbières. Two named hiking trails offer different experiences. Le Pied de Charlemagne leads to a viewpoint overlooking Lagrasse. Notre Dame du Carla passes through the garrigue to a former pilgrimage site amid nature.

The two trails therefore have different destinations: Le Pied de Charlemagne focuses on the viewpoint above the village, while Notre Dame du Carla follows a route through the garrigue to the former pilgrimage site. Conditions on hiking trails can change, so check them before setting out.

Getting to Lagrasse

From Narbonne, you can reach Lagrasse via the A61 motorway and exit 25 near Lézignan-Corbières. By train, travel to Carcassonne and then continue to Lagrasse by bus. As current timetables determine the connection, check them before your trip. This lets you plan your journey around the activities you want to shape your stay, such as visiting the abbey, going for a hike or visiting the Saturday market.
