Pépieux: Dolmen, Church Architecture and Wine
Accommodation in Pépieux
During a stay in Pépieux, you can combine cultural history with time outdoors: the Dolmen des Fades offers a glimpse of megalithic construction, while the Église Saint-Étienne showcases medieval church architecture. There is also an easy circular route and a guided vineyard visit with a tasting. Which themes you focus on depends on whether monuments, exercise or wine interest you most.
Dolmen des Fades: Structure and Dating
The Dolmen des Fades is located at Mourel de la fados in the municipality of Pépieux. It consists of a 24-metre-long megalithic gallery set within a tumulus measuring about 35 metres in length. The measurements refer to different parts: the gallery is 24 metres long, while the tumulus is about 35 metres long. The figures can therefore be understood as the proportions of a single complex, rather than as the measurement of one structure. The dolmen has construction phases dating from the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age. It can be reached via walking trails and is ideal for a walk in nature.
Church Architecture and Historic Monuments
The Église Saint-Étienne was built in a single construction phase in the 14th century, following the Languedoc style. Its very wide, single-nave interior has chapels between the buttresses. It also has a vaulted choir and vaulted apsidioles that open onto the nave. Apsidioles are small apses; the term thus adds further architectural features to the description of the choir and nave. The church has been classified as a historic monument since 1927.
Another historic stop is the former seigneurial chapel on the Plô. It was fully listed as a historic monument on 19 March 1942. The town’s history thus includes different buildings and different historical points of reference: the church’s architecture, and the chapel’s former function and protected status.
Explore on Foot or by Bike
The dolmen can be reached via walking trails and is ideal for a walk in nature. The Chemin des vignes de Pépieux offers another way to get active: this very easy, four-kilometre circular route can be enjoyed on foot or by bike and is also suitable for children. The route’s specific features are clearly stated: its circular shape, length, difficulty level and possible ways to get around. You can therefore consider this route as a separate activity option, while a walk to the dolmen centres on the megalithic monument.
Vineyard Visit and Landscape
Château Massamier La Mignarde offers guided vineyard tours with the winemaker. The tours explain the soil, climate and growing techniques. The experience also includes a tasting of the estate’s wines in a historic cellar building dating from the 18th century. The estate also sells jams, grape juice and olive oil produced there. The visit thus combines a look at winemaking with explanations of the conditions and methods of cultivation, as well as a wine tasting.
Pépieux is a rural municipality with well-preserved natural surroundings and Mediterranean landscapes. This adds a distinct landscape dimension to the range of buildings and activities. If, when planning your trip, you want to consider the natural environment and landscape as well as a specific place to visit, these characteristics are part of the picture of the area.
