Rieux-Minervois: Heritage, Pilgrimage Route and Wineries
Accommodation in Rieux-Minervois
Rieux-Minervois brings together Romanesque religious architecture and historic buildings with pilgrimage routes and wineries. These interests are closely linked for travellers, but call for different kinds of planning: visits to Sainte-Marie Church are subject to seasonal opening times, while each winery lists its own guided tours or trails. You can therefore tailor your stay to heritage, walking or wine.
Walking to Rieux-Minervois
The historic Via des Piémonts pilgrimage route from Arles to Santiago de Compostela passes through Rieux-Minervois. The village can also be reached on foot from Carcassonne via the GR®78, marked with red and white blazes. Trail markings and access may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out on a hike.
For travel by public transport, a train connection to Carcassonne followed by RTCA bus line A is listed. Check the timetable when planning your specific journey. The walking routes and the train-and-bus connection are different ways of reaching Rieux-Minervois, so they should not be understood as the same route.
The Rotonde and Romanesque Art
The Rotonde Heptagonale Sainte Marie is a listed historic monument with an unusual interior layout. Its regularly laid-out interior has 14 sides and is inscribed within a circle. Above it, a dome is supported by seven arcades resting on seven pillars. This combination of a circular form, polygonal space and seven supporting arcades gives the building its distinctive architectural character.
The Romanesque capitals in Sainte-Marie Church are also a cultural highlight of the village: they were created by the Master of Cabestany. From April 1 to October 31, the church can be visited with documentation or as part of a guided tour. The welcome desk and ticket office are at the Tourist Information Point next to the church, which is open Tuesday through Saturday. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening times and visiting options in advance.
Chapel, Castle and Village Streetscape
The history of Notre-Dame du Bout du Pont Chapel dates back to the 16th century. It was built following a vow made by a sailor from the Noailles family and expanded in the 18th century. The castle near the Argent Double dates to around 1175. Surviving features include remarkable towers, a courtyard with a well, a window and lintels. These buildings offer different historical perspectives: the chapel’s history is shaped by its founding and expansion, while the castle is described in terms of both its approximate date of origin and its surviving architectural features.
The village streetscape includes old, shady lanes with vaulted passageways. The Vieux Pont de Rieux is a three-arched bridge. The lanes, passageways and bridge complement the churches and historic buildings, offering another perspective on the village’s character.
Wineries and Landscape
Domaine Saint-Antoine lies between the drained Étang de Marseillette, rocky slopes and Mediterranean garrigue. The winery’s natural surroundings and biodiversity include fig, almond and olive trees, as well as truffle oaks. Guided tours of the wine cellar follow a visit to the sales and tasting cellar. The winery’s trails can also be explored on foot or by bike.
At Domaine des Homs, a different guided tour is the focus: it leads from the vineyards to the wine cellar and explains how the vines are cared for. The difference between the two wineries is useful for planning: at Domaine Saint-Antoine, a cellar tour and a subsequent visit to the sales and tasting cellar are described; at Domaine des Homs, the tour covers the vineyards, cellar and vine care.
If you are planning a hotel stay in Rieux-Minervois, you can first decide whether Romanesque architecture and local history, the pilgrimage route or the wineries will be your main focus. Bear in mind the church’s seasonal visiting period, and check the latest route and timetable information for hiking or travel.
