Roquefeuil: Hiking, Climbing and Village History
Accommodation in Roquefeuil
Roquefeuil combines hiking and climbing with a rich village history. If you are planning a hotel stay here, you can first consider which themes you would like to focus on during your trip. Information about walking times to the climbing crag, a hiking route and historic places in the village provides some useful points of reference.
Hiking and climbing
The climbing crag at Pic des Sarrasis is a south-facing limestone cliff sheltered from the wind. At present, Scaramus is the only developed sector. It has around 15 routes, 20 to 25 metres long, with grades ranging from 5b+ to 7b. This gives you an idea of both the character of the crag and a specific range of route grades to choose from. The number of routes and grades may change; check the latest information on route development before climbing.
Two starting points are given for reaching the crag: it is a 10-minute walk from the pass between Belcaire and Roquefeuil, and a 30-minute walk from Roquefeuil’s large car park. The walking time therefore depends on the stated starting point. Check parking and trail conditions before setting out.
The Sentier Cathare (GR®367) passes through the village of Roquefeuil. Before hiking, check the current trail markings against the official route information. A 2021 hiking guide also lists Roquefeuil as the starting point for an 11-kilometre hike; the route’s current accessibility should also be checked. The two descriptions serve different planning purposes: the GR®367 passes through the village, while the other hike is described by its length and starting point. This can help you decide in advance which hike you would like to explore further.
Landscape and nature
The ZNIEFF Tourbière du Pinet also extends into Roquefeuil and covers 341.31 hectares. This natural area includes peat bogs, woodland, pastures and hay meadows. These different types of land give the natural area several distinct facets. If you would like to include nature in your travel plans, the Tourbière du Pinet offers a specific connection to Roquefeuil.
Village history and legends
In the centre of Roquefeuil stands the new church, built in 1540: the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Its west portal has been listed as a historic monument since 7 April 1952. An altarpiece was installed at the back of the choir in the late 17th century. This gives three distinct historical reference points: the year the church was built, the later addition to the choir and the listing of the west portal. Near the old castle, a cross now marks the site of the former Saint-Martin church.
The village square features a washhouse and the “Mare aux fées” (“Fairies’ Pond”). A local legend is associated with this name: the Encantadas (fairies) of the Trou du Trésor are said to have helped the villagers wash the clothes of the dead during a deadly epidemic. The legend is thought to be connected to the cholera epidemic of 1854. The church, the former church site and the village square thus represent different aspects of local history—from buildings and memorial sites to a story associated with the village square.
For planning your trip, the routes described use different measures: the climbing crag is described in terms of walking times from two specific starting points, while the hike is described by its length of 11 kilometres.
