Serviès-en-Val: Nature, Heritage and Winegrowing
Accommodation in Serviès-En-Val
Serviès-en-Val lies in the heart of the Val-de-Dagne, at the entrance to the Corbières and south of Mont Alaric on a hillside. The valley, the transition to the Corbières and the hillside setting give the area a distinctive landscape. There are also protected monuments, natural features, winegrowing and a contemporary art scene. If you are looking for a hotel in Serviès-en-Val, these themes can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.
Landscape and Nature
Serviès-en-Val is in the Natura 2000 bird protection area FR9112027 “Corbières occidentales”. The area description mentions diverse vegetation and distinctive, though low-lying, rocky ridges. These provide suitable nesting sites for cliff-nesting species. Vegetation, rocky terrain and habitats are therefore part of the area’s natural setting—adding to its location in the Val-de-Dagne and at the entrance to the Corbières.
Another ecological designation is the ZNIEFF Type 2 area “Corbières centrales”, which includes Serviès-en-Val. The area is important for fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects and flowering plants. Unlike the Natura 2000 area, which is specifically designated as a bird protection area, this designation covers additional animal groups and plants. Both provide nature-minded travellers with different ways to understand the local landscape.
Heritage in the Area
The Château de Serviès-en-Val has been listed as a historic monument by decree since 17 February 1926 and is privately owned. The complex consists of an elongated building known as the keep, as well as residential buildings with three corner towers: two are round and one is square. This variation in design is a distinctive detail for architecture enthusiasts. The residential buildings, with their two round and one square corner towers, clearly differ from the elongated keep.
The stone wayside cross, Croix de chemin en pierre, is also a protected monument: it has been classified as a historic monument since 2 July 1911. The 16th-century cross is made of sandstone. On the front, a coat of arms depicts a deer—the emblem of the lords of Serviès; on the back, it shows a blessing hand. Its material, period and imagery give the cross a different character from the château. The local streetscape therefore features two distinct forms of heritage: a château comprising several buildings and a stone cross with imagery on both sides.
Wine and Contemporary Art
La Coop’Art – Centre d’art contemporain offers temporary exhibitions and a library. This contemporary cultural offering complements the historic buildings. As offerings may change, check current visiting arrangements before your trip.
Winegrowing is also part of the area’s character. Red and rosé country wines made from Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet are produced in Serviès-en-Val; Chardonnay is used for white wines. The grape varieties listed are thus associated with two specific wine colours. Visitors are welcomed in the tasting rooms at Cellier Joseph Delteil, where they can sample the product range. Wine enthusiasts can find both a connection to local production and a described tasting opportunity here.
