Discover Thézan-Des-Corbières: Wine, Landscapes and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Thézan-Des-Corbières
A trip to Thézan-Des-Corbières can revolve around several specific interests: wine and tastings, local produce, landscapes and architectural heritage, as well as a challenging mountain biking loop. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around whichever of these aspects interests you most. Visiting arrangements also vary: tours at Château de Saint-Estève are offered year-round, while the winemakers’ platters at Château Aiguilloux are available in summer.
Wineries and local highlights
At Château de Saint-Estève, the Latham family welcomes visitors year-round for tours and wine tastings. Confirm arrangements before you arrive. The estate covers 120 hectares of vineyards, some of which lie in the Cru Boutenac terroir. Its cultural heritage includes that of Henri de Monfreid, an adventurer and writer from the region. A visit therefore combines winemaking with a regional literary connection.
Château Aiguilloux covers 125 hectares, including 37 hectares of vineyards surrounded by 95 hectares of woodland and garrigue. Catering is available year-round, while winemakers’ platters are served in the park in summer. The seasonal difference is particularly important when planning your trip: check whether the platters are available during your visit.
Goat farm and local produce
Since 2007, Ferme du Montagut has kept a herd of 100 Alpine and Saanen goats in a protected garrigue landscape. The farm makes a variety of cheeses bearing the “Pays Cathare” label, including Ecu, Ecusson and Tomme. You can also sample natural yoghurt, fresh milk and aromatic herbs there. The availability of individual products may vary.
Ferme du Montagut welcomes families during opening hours. The goats are milked daily at 8 a.m. by appointment. If you’d like to include this experience in your visit, arrange it in advance. This makes the farm’s visiting arrangements clearly different from the year-round tours and wine tastings at Château de Saint-Estève.
Mountain biking and landscapes
The “Entre Montagut et La Recaoufa” mountain biking loop is 59 kilometres long, with 1,798 metres of elevation gain, and is rated very difficult. You can start in Thézan-des-Corbières at the Communauté de Communes car park. From the car park, the loop leaves the village via Rue du Moulin à Vent. The distance, elevation gain and difficulty rating are important points to consider when planning your ride; also check the route and conditions before setting off.
The “Découverte du Pays Corbières Minervois” route passes through charming villages and unspoilt landscapes. It offers another way to experience the area’s scenery as you plan your trip. Château Aiguilloux also provides a distinctive setting, with its vineyards, woodland and garrigue, while Ferme du Montagut keeps its goats in a protected garrigue landscape.
Architectural heritage of winemaking
The Cellier Roque d'Agnel winery in Thézan was probably built in 1919 by Jules-Pierre Reverdy. Villeneuve carried out the extension in several construction phases; the year 1951 is engraved in the cement of the staircase structure. The Cellier offers another perspective on wine culture: here, the architectural history of a winery takes centre stage alongside vineyards and tastings.
Château de Saint-Estève, in turn, brings together winemaking and the heritage of Henri de Monfreid. If you tailor your trip to your interests, the tours and wine tastings, produce from Ferme du Montagut, cycling route and architectural heritage can each offer a different focus.
