Winegrowing, village history and trails in Estézargues
Estézargues offers several practical starting points for planning a trip: winegrowing and olive oil, historic traces in the village, and hiking trails through the village and vineyards. If you are looking for a hotel in Estézargues, consider whether wine producers, local history, a market visit or a hike should shape your stay. Local offerings differ both in theme and in the conditions for visiting.
Church and former fortifications
The parish church of Estézargues dates from the 12th century and was fortified in the 14th century. The village’s row of houses also follows former fortifications, built in the 14th century to protect the village. The 14th century is therefore reflected in two different ways: in the fortification of the church and in the structures built to defend the village. So when taking in Estézargues, it is not just a single building that matters; the layout of the row of houses also bears traces of history.
Wines and producers
The entire municipal area of Estézargues is classified as Côtes du Rhône or Côtes du Rhône Villages. The Cave des Vignerons d'Estézargues offers wines from the AOC Côtes du Rhône, AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages Signargues and IGP Coteaux du Pont du Gard. These refer to different scopes: the first classification covers the entire municipal area, while the three named designations describe the Cave’s offerings. For more than 30 years, the Cave has produced wine without additives; 80% of its plots are farmed organically. These details relate to two aspects of the operation: winemaking and the management of its plots.
The Cave offers cellar tours for groups by prior reservation. Domaine de Pierredon is a wine- and olive-growing estate that has been in operation for several generations. There, individual and group visits without a fixed guide are possible at any time. The visit formats therefore differ: a reservation is required for group tours at the Cave, while the Domaine also offers individual visits without a fixed guide. Confirm your reservation with the Cave before travelling and check the visiting arrangements at the Domaine before you arrive.
Market and olive oil
The weekly market includes, among others, the artisan butcher and charcuterie shop Deurrieu Frères, La Chèvrerie du Bois, and fruit and vegetable sellers from Marie-Josée Fauque. Vendor participation may change; if you have a particular purchase in mind, check which vendors are currently at the market. Estézargues is part of the geographical area of the AOC “Huile d’Olive de Nîmes” for olive oil. This is another regional product connection, alongside the wine designations.
Hikes of varying durations
The “Découverte du village et du vignoble d'Estézargues” route is a short, easy circular hike exploring the village and its vineyards. It includes a viewpoint overlooking the village and vineyards. Trail conditions may change, so check local conditions if you are planning this loop.
The section of the Chemin Urbain V between Blauzac and Estézargues is a different proposition: it covers 43.9 km and is designed to be completed over two days. The route follows the historical trail of Pope Urban V and is marked with the red-and-white blazes used for long-distance hiking trails. There is a clear difference in the time required: on one hand, a short, easy village loop with views of the vineyards; on the other, a two-day section with a historical connection to Pope Urban V.
