Fons: Local History and Outdoor Trails

Fons brings together local history, collections and a range of hiking and cycling options. The Musée des Collections Saturnin Garimond explores the history of the area, while the Église Saint-Saturnin de Fons-Outre-Gardon offers a tangible look at building history and architecture. Two routes provide different experiences: a moderate circular hike and a difficult mountain biking (MTB) route. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural attractions and clearly described tours.

Collections from Prehistory to the Gallo-Roman Period

The Musée des Collections Saturnin Garimond presents collections on the history of the area, spanning prehistory and palaeontology to the Gallo-Roman period. The exhibition is divided into three sections: geology and palaeontology, archaeology and prehistory, and Saturnin Garimond’s other natural history pursuits. Geology and palaeontology focus on the Earth and earlier life forms; archaeology and prehistory add the story of human history. The third section is devoted to Garimond’s natural history pursuits. The museum visit therefore cannot be reduced to a single period or field of study.

Church History and Architecture

The Église Saint-Saturnin de Fons-Outre-Gardon has several important dates in its history. According to bibliographic sources, its founding dates back to the 12th century. The church was burned down in 1703 during the Camisard uprising and altered in 1850. This chronology distinguishes the traditionally recorded founding period from the later upheavals and changes.

The floor plan is also precisely described: it is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a single-nave body and a projecting transept. The nave forms the church’s main longitudinal section; the transept projects to the sides and crosses this longitudinal axis. Together, the layout and its structural elements provide a guide to the architecture, without confusing different periods or parts of the building.

Comparing Hiking and Cycling

The Le Vallon de Robiac trail is a moderate 12.6-kilometre circular hike, with a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It starts and finishes in Fons-Outre-Gardon. The route passes through the Vallon de Roubiac and over the heights of the Massif des Lens. This protected natural area combines vineyards and garrigue. Its distance, circular format and stated duration give the hike a clearly defined profile.

The Le Bois des Lens mountain biking route offers a different experience. It is a difficult, 25.1-kilometre circular route, marked in yellow and signposted, that passes through Fons as part of a route through seven communes: Combas, Crespian, Montmirat, Saint-Mamert-du-Gard, Fons, Moulézan and Vic-le-Fesq. The route crosses a garrigue landscape. It offers views of the Cévennes and Pic Saint-Loup, as well as Mont Ventoux on clear days. Check the conditions for the mountain biking route before setting off.

The difference between the route details is important when choosing a tour: Le Vallon de Robiac is a moderate hike with a stated duration; Le Bois des Lens is a difficult mountain biking circuit of more than 25 kilometres. Distance alone therefore does not tell the same story as the combination of activity, difficulty and time. Use these specific differences to choose the tour that best suits your plans.

Events and Wine

The Fons'tivales in summer 2026 featured opportunities to meet winemakers and taste local wines. The wines listed were under the IGP Cévennes, IGP Gard and Coteaux Pont du Gard designations. For visitors interested in wine, the event programme combines conversations with winemakers and tastings.

The Fête votive 2026 was scheduled to take place from 27 to 30 August as a four-day traditional festival with free admission, inviting visitors to rediscover Camargue traditions. The programme included an Abrivado-Bandido event on 29 August. If you are planning to attend a festival, check the programme for your travel dates.
