Fourques: Suspension Bridge, Camargue and Heritage
Accommodation in Fourques
Fourques between the Rhône branches and the Camargue
Fourques lies at the meeting of the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône, where the Camargue delta begins. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Fourques, the location combines riverside scenery with local heritage. Two points of interest may shape your plans: cycle routes and wetlands, or the buildings and memorials in the town. A trip that takes in both aspects can also be planned around these specific themes.
Getting to Fourques
Fourques can be reached via the N113, the A9 motorway, and the CD570 through the Camargue. You can take these three roads into account when planning the rest of your trip.
Suspension bridge and construction history
A notable landmark in the town’s history is the Pont suspendu de Fourques. It opened on 1 April 1830, following a bridge project by engineer Marc Séguin. The Pont de Fourques has been listed and protected as a “Monument historique” since 1988. The suspension bridge thus links 19th-century engineering history with a later period of heritage protection.
Church, levee history and archaeology
The church in Fourques is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours and is also known as Saint Sixte. At the corner of Les Lices and the Vieux Pont, the Rhônomètre shows how levee heights have changed since the 12th century.
The two-person sarcophagus in Fourques probably dates from the 1st or 2nd century. Château Boissy d’Anglas is a walled château whose existence dates back to the 11th century; it appears to have been built on the remains of a Roman villa.
A 20th-century memorial
The Mur des Justes commemorates the Baud family, who were honoured as “Righteous Among the Nations” for sheltering and hiding two Jewish children during the Second World War. Alongside older traces of architecture and archaeology, this brings a specific story of help and protection into focus.
Cycle routes and nature
The Voie verte Beaucaire-Fourques ends at the Fourques suspension bridge and runs between the Rhône and the Petit Rhône through wetlands and ponds. The riverside woodland along the Petit Rhône is home to a variety of birdlife. If a specific destination matters as much to you as the riverside and wetland scenery, this route brings together both features.
A route guide from November 2025 describes the onward journey for cyclists on the ViaRhôna north of Fourques towards Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône or Sète.
Journées Camarguaises in April
The Journées Camarguaises take place every year in April and include Abrivados, Bandidos and Manade competitions. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific dates for that year’s edition in advance, as the exact dates may change.
