Landscape and Market Day

Générargues stretches across the three valleys of Amous, Dodé and Gardon, separated by high hills. The commune is part of the Cévennes National Park. The valleys and hills form the landscape around the village, while its cultural history is reflected in its churches, a historic estate and the bamboo grove.

A producers’ market is held in Générargues every Friday morning. If you would like to include a market visit in your plans, check the date locally before your trip.

Churches and Local History

The Church of Notre Dame de Générargues is first mentioned in 1276 in the cartulary of Notre Dame du Bonheur. In December 1702, at the start of the Camisard War, Rolland’s troop burned down the church. The Protestant temple of Générargues was built in the village centre in 1841, using fine brickwork, and has an octagonal bell tower. The histories of the two buildings highlight different details: for Notre Dame, the early mention and destruction; for the temple, its date of construction, building material and tower shape. Octagonal means eight-sided; together with the fine brickwork, this helps distinguish the temple’s shape from its material.

Château de la Rode and Silk Culture

Between the hamlets of La Rode and Le Viala stands Château de la Rode, a large bourgeois residence dating from the late 17th century. Adjacent to the château are a former silkworm farm dating from 1812 and a farm. Silk culture was economically important to Générargues. Cocoon production began in the early 17th century and peaked in the mid-19th century; the abundance of water encouraged the establishment of several silk mills. The silkworm farm dating from 1812 falls between the start of production and this later peak.

Bambouseraie: Garden and Heritage

Founded by Eugène Mazel in 1856, the Bambouseraie en Cévennes in Générargues is an exotic garden with plant species from all five continents and more than 1,000 varieties. This botanical diversity has two dimensions: the number of varieties describes the range, while the five continents indicate the plants’ geographical spread. Check seasonal access conditions before your visit.

Since 2023, the Bambouseraie en Cévennes has offered the family treasure hunt “la quête de la fleur d'Aleya”. Families or groups explore the garden through observation and deduction. Observation and deduction make the garden the focus of an active exploration.

The Bambouseraie de Prafrance in Générargues is listed as a historic monument and has been awarded the “Jardin remarquable” label. The historic estate includes a system of mills, canals, channels and pumping machinery, as well as the façades and roofs of the Prafrance farm. This brings together two distinct parts of the estate: technical installations and agricultural buildings.
