Lanuéjols: Hiking, Forest and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Lanuéjols
Lanuéjols lies on the Causse Noir, a small limestone plateau. Below the plateau flow the Jonte, Tarn, Trévezel and Dourbie rivers. This landscape provides the setting for trails, forest areas and historic sights. When planning, the hiking trails can be distinguished by their key features: some start and finish in Lanuéjols, while others lead to a named destination; distance and difficulty provide further guidance.
Hiking trails between the Causse and the forest
The Sentier du Renard starts and finishes in Lanuéjols and is marked in yellow. Its route passes through the contrasting landscapes of the Causse and Aigoual, including deep forests and ravines lined with Scots pines. Thus, starting and finishing in the village are concrete reference points, alongside the changing landscapes along the trail.
The Sentier de la Croix du Devois also passes through forest areas. Hikers may spot red deer and great spotted woodpeckers there. The 8 km Sentier de Pradines is a family-friendly walk from Lanuéjols to the restored hamlet of Pradines. By contrast, the rating of very easy and family-friendly is a specific point of reference for the hike to La Croix des Trois Evêques. The options therefore highlight different details: the distance and destination of the route to Pradines, or the difficulty of the hike to the Croix.
Arboretum and red deer
The Arboretum de La Foux covers about 10 hectares and brings together tree species from around the world. These include firs, sequoias, cedars and giant Douglas firs. An open-access educational trail runs through the arboretum and is 1.2 km long. Its length offers a different scale from the 8 km Sentier de Pradines: the educational trail focuses on discovering the different trees, while the route to Pradines leads to the restored hamlet.
Red deer are also part of the landscape in connection with the Forêt des Commandeurs. It is considered the most important winter refuge for the sensitive red deer population in this area. Together with the possibility of spotting red deer on the Sentier de la Croix du Devois, this gives a clearer picture of how wildlife features on the trails and in the local landscape.
Ranch visits and seasonal activities
At its ranch in Lanuéjols, Randals Bison offers rides in a tractor-drawn wagon that takes visitors into the breeding herd area. In July and August, horseback ranch tours and cattle-sorting demonstrations are also available. The activities differ both in the type of visit and the season: the wagon ride goes into the herd area, while the horseback tours and demonstrations are offered in July and August.
Church, menhirs and La Croix des Trois Evêques
The Church of Saint-Laurent was completed in 1857 and renovated in 2007. Lanuéjols’ cultural heritage sights include menhirs and dolmens. Another historic stop is La Croix des Trois Evêques, which is also the destination of a very easy, family-friendly hike.
The historical interpretation links the erection of the Croix around 1790 to a meeting of the bishops of Gard, Lozère and Aveyron at the borders of the three departments. The name of the cross and this tradition give the route its own historical theme, while the other routes are shaped mainly by their landscapes, wildlife sightings or specific destinations.
