Malons-et-Elze: Hiking at Serre de Taravel and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Malons-et-Elze
For a trip to Malons-et-Elze, hiking trails and historic buildings provide two clear points of reference. Serre de Taravel is known for its high-altitude trails and views; Saint-Pierre and Château d’Elze offer insights into architecture and local history. These are complemented by nature and leisure activities. The focus will vary depending on whether you are mainly interested in hiking, seeing the architecture or planning a guided activity.
Landscape and hiking trails
Malons-et-Elze lies within the optimal membership area of the Cévennes National Park. The Serre de Taravel ridge overlooks the Cèze and Ardèche river basins. The trail begins at the Church of Saint-Pierre in Malons and climbs to an altitude of 969 metres. Along the way, there are views of Mont-Lozère and the Tanargue.
Other routes differ in their stated destinations and route types. The GR44A passes through Malons and provides a 46-kilometre circular route connecting to Les Vans. The second stage of the GR® de Pays Haute Vallée de la Cèze runs from Malons-et-Elze to Aujac. Yellow markings and local signposting are indicated for this stage; check the latest route information before setting out.
The routes offer different features to help you choose: the Serre de Taravel is defined by its elevation and viewpoints, while the GR44A is notable for the length of its circular route and its connection to Les Vans. The GR® de Pays stage names Aujac as its destination. This makes it possible to distinguish between a high-altitude trail, a circular route and a stage according to your preferred type of hike, without assuming an unspecified walking time.
Saint-Pierre and Château d’Elze
The Church of Saint-Pierre is a Romanesque church at an altitude of more than 800 metres. Its architectural features include finely carved capitals, as well as an apse and façade made of grey granite from the neighbouring plateau. The trail to Serre de Taravel begins at this church, bringing a distinctive building and a specific hiking route together at the same starting point.
Château d’Elze is also part of local history: this historic building dates from the 14th century. Together with Saint-Pierre, it provides a second cultural focus alongside the trails. If you would like to include architectural history in your travel plans, you can consider the Romanesque church and the medieval château as two distinct historical points of interest.
Nature and leisure activities
Asinerie Badjâne offers donkey hikes at Le Blacheyral in Cessénades, Malons-et-Elze. Confirm the current operating arrangements before travelling. The Mas de l’Ayre leisure centre offers a treetop adventure course for children and adults; participation is possible from the age of two. Guided electric scooter tours are also available there. Check the conditions for these seasonal activities before visiting. The Sentier du Mas de l’Ayre is a discovery trail through the forest, introducing visitors to the cycles of forest life and the mining history that shaped the area for a long time.
En Forêt offers classes, workshops and training, as well as guidance for children and adults. Programmes may vary, so check the current schedule. The different activities each have their own focus: donkey hikes, treetop courses, guided electric scooter tours and an interpretive forest trail are different ways to include activities in your travel plans.
