Discover Rousson: Castles, History and Landscapes
Accommodation in Rousson
Rousson brings together historic buildings and themes of hiking and nature. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around whether you are particularly interested in architecture, exhibitions or landscapes. Château de Rousson, Saint Martin Church and the Préhistorama offer different cultural highlights; the hiking route and Lac de Ségoussac add activity and ecological restoration to these themes.
Castle and Romanesque Church
Château de Rousson dates from the 16th century and overlooks the village. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1972. It should not be confused with another château, which is the destination of the hiking route from Rousson: Château de Trouillas dates from the 17th century. The two buildings provide different historical points of reference in the area.
Église Saint Martin de Rousson also combines a clear historical context with contemporary cultural use. The Romanesque church dates from the 12th century and has been listed as a historic monument since 1963. Today, it serves as a venue for cultural events. Those interested in architectural history will find a different focus here than at the château: the church represents Romanesque architecture, while Château de Rousson dates from the 16th century.
Préhistorama and Plant Knowledge
The Préhistorama uses an immersive presentation to explore the origins of life and human evolution. Its collection includes more than 1,500 exhibits, including real fossils and exceptionally rare casts. Its year-round programme includes workshops for children, conferences and performances. The offerings therefore span exhibitions on the history of the Earth and humanity, as well as events and workshops.
The Ethnobotanical Gardens of La Gardie focus on local heritage relating to wild and cultivated plants. Guided tours and a botanical trail offer different ways to explore the subject. For visitors interested not only in historic buildings but also in plants and their cultural significance, this provides a distinct thematic highlight.
Hiking Route and Landscape
The hiking route to Château de Trouillas is a 3.2-kilometre circular trail starting in Rousson and takes about an hour. It leads from the village to the 17th-century château and offers views of the Cévennes. The entire route is marked in yellow and designated as a Promenade et Randonnée type hiking trail. Its circular layout, approximate duration and destination give you practical reference points if you would like to include a hike in your travel plans.
Lac de Ségoussac was a basin containing bauxite residues that was completely drained and restored. An LPO report from February 2022 describes how fauna and flora are reclaiming the site. Garrigue scrubland and rocky terrain border a wetland there. During an excursion on 23 February 2022, coots, great crested grebes and cormorants were observed or heard. These observations are from that specific date and add an example of the birdlife recorded there to the description of the landscape.
Castellas: Remains and Views
The Castellas site includes the remains of a feudal castle on a former Gallo-Roman citadel. Among the surviving features is a section of wall built from local limestone, located between the keep’s foundations and the rock face and identified as the remains of a private chapel. In addition to these historic remains, Castellas offers panoramic views stretching from the Cévennes to Mont Ventoux; in clear weather, the view extends as far as Mont Blanc. The combination of archaeological traces and far-reaching views makes Castellas a distinct highlight alongside the château, church and museum.
