Discover Saint-Jean-De-Maruéjols-Et-Avéjan
Accommodation in Saint-Jean-De-Maruéjols-Et-Avéjan
Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols-et-Avéjan brings together natural landscapes, mining history and religious architecture. When choosing a destination, you can consider whether nature, historic architecture, a hiking trail or cultural events should shape your stay. The Roman Voie d’Antonin le Pieux crosses the commune from south to north, giving the village a historical connection that is complemented by several other landmarks.
Natural landscapes between streams and dry grasslands
The 1,288.99-hectare ZNIEFF site 820030146 includes Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols-et-Avéjan. It is protected under the Loi Montagne and classified as a site under the Habitats Directive. The predominantly marly subsoil and relatively flat terrain give rise to numerous small streams, most of which carry water only seasonally. Locally, wetlands and marshes are also part of the landscape. The dry grasslands are particularly rich in orchids and provide suitable habitats for birds of open landscapes. Streams, wetlands and dry grasslands therefore represent different habitats within the same natural area.
Mining history and former mines
The Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols asphalt concession was established in 1859; the Société Française des Asphaltes (SFA) operated it from 1872. One surviving reminder of this history is the Maison des Mines, a restored former residence for engineers.
The former SMAC mine site lies 1.5 kilometres north of the village. From Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols, follow the D979 towards Barjac; then continue on foot along a tree-lined avenue up the hill. A permit from Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols town hall is required to visit, and you must not approach the buildings. Check access information with the town hall before your visit.
Buildings from different periods
The Tour de l’Horloge is a surviving part of the former fortifications of the original village and is dated to around the 12th century. In 1741, it acquired its present appearance and was roofed with glazed tiles. The foundations of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste probably also date from the 12th century. These two references to the period therefore concern different buildings, each with a tentative historical date.
The Protestant temple was inaugurated in 1820. A stone communion table made of asphalt rock, taken from the first temple built in 1612, is still used there today. Different architectural and cultural features come together at the Église Saint-Pierre d’Avéjan: it was built in a particularly pure Romanesque style, and a crypt lies beneath the Chapel of the Counts of Avéjan. Today, the church is used for exhibitions and concerts; the events programme may vary.
The Pont de Caveirac crossed the Claysse near the former Moulin de Caveirac. It is probably medieval in origin, not Roman, although it is sometimes incorrectly described as Roman. Together with the Voie d’Antonin le Pieux, it offers a concrete comparison: the Roman road crosses the commune from south to north, while the bridge probably belongs to a different period.
Hiking trail, outdoor activities and events
The Circuit de Beauséjour starts in Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols, is 15 kilometres long and is rated easy. It passes through the asphalt mines and the hamlet of Avéjan; check local trail conditions before setting out. Swimming is possible at the Galinier site along the route. If you plan to swim there, check the current conditions beforehand. The hiking trail thus combines a specific distance and difficulty level with stops in the landscape.
VACANISPORT offers a fun outdoor experience through the former mines of Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols and the hamlet of Avéjan. Activities include an escape game, an outdoor adventure game, a treasure hunt and geocaching. Check seasonal availability for your visit dates. For culture lovers, Athome Théâtre stages “Théâtre sous les Etoiles” each year at the SFA site. It engages around ten cultural professionals for a fixed term and welcomes more than 5,000 spectators. Check the dates for your travel year if this event will shape your plans.
