Saint-Julien-Les-Rosiers: Hiking and Heritage
Accommodation in Saint-Julien-Les-Rosiers
Saint-Julien-Les-Rosiers combines hiking opportunities with industrial history, archaeological heritage and monastic architecture. The Du Carabiol à la Minette circular trail provides specific details on distance, elevation gain, duration and difficulty; another route passes through Bouzarit and La Gardie to the Croix de Panissière. You can plan your stay around hikes or historical themes. Some destinations are also subject to special visiting conditions.
Hiking with Different Points of Interest
The Du Carabiol à la Minette circular trail starts at Carabiol in Saint-Julien-Les-Rosiers and follows the GR44C back to Saint-Julien-Les-Rosiers. It is 11 kilometres long, has 230 metres of positive elevation gain and takes about three hours and 30 minutes; the difficulty level is moderate. The time estimate is approximate. Use it as a guide for planning your day, not as an exact indication of your personal pace. Taken together, the distance, elevation gain and moderate difficulty give a clear picture of the time and physical effort this hike requires.
Another route leads to the Croix de Panissière via Bouzarit and La Gardie; the return to Saint-Julien-Les-Rosiers also follows the GR44C. This lets you choose between a hike with a specified duration and elevation gain, and a route that passes through these two places.
Arbousse and the Carabiol Spring
The Arbousse site is at an elevation of 230 metres and can be reached via a marked circular trail. From Arbousse, you can discover Alès, Rousson and Brouzet-les-Alès in an exceptional way. The 230 metres at Arbousse refers to the site's elevation; on the Du Carabiol à la Minette circular trail, the same figure refers to positive elevation gain. Elevation and elevation gain are two different measurements, even when the figure is the same.
The Carabiol spring is the visible part of a vast underground water system and is a remarkable spring outlet from a very complex underground network.
Industrial History and Archaeological Heritage
The former Fonts pyrite mine and sulphuric acid factory at La Minette closed permanently in 1961. Ruins of 18th-century buildings and parts of 19th-century buildings remain. The year 1961 marks the end of operations; the ruins also point to much earlier phases of construction.
The Dolmen du Peyro Blanco is a collective burial site from the late Neolithic, as well as a historic site and monument. A collective burial site is a burial place for several people. The tumulus, or burial mound, is about 15 metres in diameter. Its dating, burial function and approximate size are thus all presented together.
Visiting Conditions at the Monastery and Swimming Pool
The Monastère Notre Dame des Fonts was built in the 11th century and consists of a church and a Cistercian nuns' monastery. It is private property and cannot be visited; check before your trip whether this access status is still in effect.
The Carabiol grounds have a swimming pool. Check before your trip whether it is open during the season relevant to your visit.
