Saint-Laurent-D'aigouze combines a protected wetland landscape with structures from different historical periods. The Réserve Naturelle Régionale du Mahistre et Musette, the medieval Tour Carbonnière and the Fort de Peccais each offer a distinct perspective. The history of the tower and fort is also connected with the salt marshes and salt trade. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature watching, historic structures or outdoor activities. Visiting options vary among the sights: as well as viewpoints and exterior views, some places are not open to the public inside.

Wetlands and wildlife watching

The Réserve Naturelle Régionale du Mahistre et Musette is a protected, 130-hectare complex of marshes, ponds and reed beds, home to a diverse range of wildlife. Its different types of wetland define the character of the reserve. For another perspective on the landscape, visit the Tour Carbonnière viewpoint: its terrace, with information panels, offers views across the marshland. You can watch wetland birds as well as horses and bulls of the Camargue there.

Guided discoveries of the flora and fauna of the Réserve Naturelle du Mahistre are offered year-round. This is one way to explore the reserve's plant and animal life; the Tour Carbonnière, by contrast, offers a viewpoint over the marshland and a chance to watch its wildlife. A guided nature experience and a viewpoint with information panels thus provide different ways to engage with nature.

Tour Carbonnière, Fort de Peccais and Château de Calvières

The Tour Carbonnière is a medieval observation tower dating from the 13th century. As an outpost, it stood on the only land route to the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes and its salt marshes. This historical role gives the tower a significance beyond that of a mere viewpoint: it also represents the connection between the town and the salt marshes at the time. Today, the terrace looks out over the wetland landscape and the wildlife that can be spotted there.

The Fort de Peccais is a royal fortification dating from the 16th century. It was used to monitor and protect the salt harvest and salt trade. The interior is closed to the public, but the remains can be viewed from a footpath with an information panel. Check local access information before visiting.

The Château de Calvières is a private estate dating from the 14th century and is not open to visitors. Its façade can be seen from the village square or Boulevard Alexandra David-Néel. The four-hectare park, visible from the road, is also part of the estate; it is home to numerous rare Mediterranean plant species. The exterior and park therefore offer a different view of the area's heritage from the Tour's viewing terrace or the footpath by the fort.
