Saint-Privat-Des-Vieux: Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Saint-Privat-Des-Vieux
Saint-Privat-des-Vieux lies on a hill between the valleys of the Avène and the Bruèges. The features of the area offer a variety of experiences: walking trails with specified distances, architectural and religious history, and a public recreational facility in the town centre. There are also archaeological traces dating back long before the medieval and modern-era events. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between specific trails, individual buildings, and a broader historical perspective.
Trails and landmarks
The “Pont Napoléon” circular trail is 4.5 kilometres long. Pont Napoléon, at Chemin Replo, 30340 Saint-Privat-des-Vieux, is designated as a historic site and monument, as well as an engineering structure—a bridge or viaduct. It provides a crossing over the Avène River.
Another walk leads to La Croix Bertranet. The trail is 4 kilometres long and starts at the car park by the Maison des Jeunes in the town centre. The orientation sign at the Croix gives walkers a view of Alès and the Cévennes. At 4 kilometres, this trail is half a kilometre shorter than the Pont Napoléon circular trail. The distances offer a concrete comparison, while each of the named destinations has its own historical associations.
Church and local history
Église Saint Jean is in the centre of Saint-Privat-des-Vieux and is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. During the Camisard War, the troops of the Camisard leader Jean Cavalier set it on fire on the night of 23–24 December 1702. Two funerary vessels dating from the 12th century were discovered during renovation work: one inside the church and the other outside, beside the road. The church thus brings together medieval architectural and archaeological history with a precisely dated event from the early 18th century.
La Croix Bertranet is also designated as a historic site and religious heritage, specifically as a Calvary and cross. The named places therefore have different thematic emphases: at Pont Napoléon, the focus is on the monument and engineering structure; at the Croix, it is on religious heritage and its classification as a Calvary.
Recreation in the town centre
The Parc Intergénérationnel is a public recreational facility of more than one hectare in the town centre. Its grounds are landscaped and tree-lined. The facility includes a pump track suitable for riders of all ages. The park is also accessible to people with reduced mobility. With its central location and tree-lined grounds, it offers a different point of interest from the walking trails and historic buildings.
Archaeological traces
The area’s history goes back to prehistoric times. From the end of the Neolithic period (2500/2200 BC), people used three sites in Saint-Privat-des-Vieux: the caves of Avène and Montgrand, and a pastoral refuge at Usclade. Archaeological finds from these sites are currently on display at the Musée du Colombier in Alès. This period is considerably earlier than the 12th-century Romanesque church; the two subjects offer different perspectives on the history of the area.
