Arboras: Château, Wine and Rocher des Vierges
Accommodation in Arboras
Arboras is a hilltop village on the first foothills of the Larzac, at an elevation of 250 m. For planning your trip, Château d’Arboras, wine tastings and the circular trail at Rocher des Vierges offer different points of interest. Mont Saint-Baudille is also a named landmark. This lets you consider architecture, wine and a hike according to your own time and interests.
The village and Château d’Arboras
Arboras retains the general appearance it had at the end of the 18th century. Following several restoration phases, Château d’Arboras now displays its elegant 17th-century form. These two dates refer to different aspects: the appearance of the village and the form of the Château.
The Château is listed as a historic monument for all its façades and roofs, as well as parts of its interior. These include fireplaces with plaster decorations and ceramic fireboxes. The coat-of-arms floor on the first floor of the tower in the western part of the building is also included. The listing thus covers both the exterior and specifically identified interior features. When visiting, it is helpful to distinguish these specific features from the Château’s architectural history in general.
The protected-area designation is also part of the regional context: Arboras is one of the municipalities in the Hautes Garrigues du Montpelliérais Natura 2000 site. The site is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA). The site’s name and this protected-area category provide precise context if you are interested in the municipality’s natural setting.
Wine and tastings
The cellar in the north courtyard of Château d’Arboras offers tastings of wines produced there. These are held seasonally, so check the dates before your visit. This way, you can plan a tasting specifically rather than assume it is available at any time.
Domaine de l’Accent offers organic wines from the Terrasses du Larzac. Selected white, rosé, red and sparkling wines are available for free tastings. Visit arrangements may change, so confirm the details in advance. Tastings give you the opportunity to discover several wine categories, without a specific selection being guaranteed for every visit.
Domaine de la Réserve d’O biodynamically farms 12 hectares of vines on the Causse d’Arboras. It has its own tasting area and offers tastings. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement; coordinate your visit before you arrive. The visit options differ for planning purposes: seasonal tastings at the Château, free tastings of selected wines at Domaine de l’Accent, and tours by arrangement at Réserve d’O. Check the time or appointment requirements that apply to your visit in each case.
Circular trail and viewpoints
The circular trail at Rocher des Vierges is 3 km long, takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, and is rated very easy. Its length, duration and rating help you assess the scope of this particular route. Parking is available at Parking du Rocher des Vierges in Les Moulins, 34150 Arboras. From Saint-Saturnin, a 4 km paved track leads towards Rocher des Vierges and the car park. This access route and the length of the circular trail are two separate details to consider when planning.
From the summit platform of Rocher des Vierges, you can see Mont Saint-Baudille and Montagne de la Séranne. Mont Saint-Baudille is 837 m high and can be reached via the road leading to Arboras. Before driving, check locally for any temporary restrictions on this road.
