Discover Bédarieux
Accommodation in Bédarieux
Bédarieux offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: trails through the countryside, climbing routes, historic sites and markets with regional character. The town describes Bédarieux as a “ville porte” (gateway town) to the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc. Which of these aspects you focus on can shape your choice of a hotel in Bédarieux and how you plan your days.
Trails and outdoor activities
The Voie Verte du Haut-Languedoc, also known as Passa Païs, runs between Bédarieux and Mazamet for more than 75 kilometres along a former railway line. Motor vehicles are not allowed. The route is reserved for walking, cycling, running, roller skating and horse riding. Check local notices for temporary restrictions before setting out.
A shorter circular route offers a different perspective on the surrounding area: the Balcons de l’Orb trail passes through pine forests and garrigue on the heights above Bédarieux, with views of the Orb Valley and Caroux. It also reaches a plateau with dry-stone structures and follows the Orb towards the end. When choosing a route, you can therefore weigh up a longer connection along a former railway line against a circular trail with changing scenery.
The hike to Roc Rouge has its own distinctive landscape: it passes through causses, by mas and mazets, along paved paths and by dry-stone capitelles. Along the way, there are panoramic views of Bédarieux and the Caroux massif. The hike starts at Bédarieux railway station, which is served by the Train de l’Aubrac line. As train services depend on the timetable, check current connections if you plan to arrive by rail.
The Roc Rouge climbing area is separate from the hike: the equipped climbing practice area has 39 routes across three sectors, with grades ranging from 4b to 7a. There is a developed car park at the foot of the crag, and the uphill approach takes ten minutes. Check the routes and climbing conditions on site. If you would rather include another outdoor activity in your stay, Arbre et Aventure 34 is located in Bédarieux, in the Grand Orb and in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc. It offers seven adventure courses and more than 200 metres of zip lines in total. Check opening arrangements before your visit.
Culture and history
The Église Saint-Louis dates from the early 19th century and is dedicated to Saint Louis. The church houses a rare Romantic-era organ by the organ builder Cavaillé-Coll, which is listed as a Monument historique. Self-guided visits and guided tours are available on request; the average visit lasts one hour. Check visiting arrangements with the local tourist office.
At the Chapelle Saint-Raphaël de la Bastide, a tentative account of its early history sits alongside a later written record: the sanctuary may date from pre-Romanesque times, while the chapel’s first documented mention dates to 1182. Near the chapel is a Roman structure that is thought to have been connected with a miraculous spring venerated by pilgrims. This possible connection remains a hypothesis.
The Musée du Train et de la Photographie displays two model railway layouts depicting Bédarieux and Faugères. If you plan to visit, check current opening arrangements.
Markets and local produce
The traditional Bédarieux market is held year-round in the town centre on Monday mornings. On Saturday mornings, the BioNat market brings together local producers of organic and natural products. The two markets have different focuses, giving you different opportunities to include regional products in your stay plans. As market arrangements can change, confirm the current date if you are planning a visit.
The Soirée Oeno-Gourmande is an August event in Bédarieux. It brings visitors together with local winemakers and their estates; platters of local produce are served as well. Dates and programmes may change, so it is advisable to check before travelling.
When planning a hotel stay, it helps to first decide which activities and visiting times matter most to you—for example, a trip on Passa Païs, a morning at the market or a visit by appointment. You can then compare the available hotel deals in Bédarieux against your own travel plans.
