Camplong combines a longer circular hike with traces of its mining and architectural history. The village is located in the Vallon de l'Espaze and in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park. This brings together different interests for planning your trip: the Randonnée de l'Arboretum de l'Espaze has a clearly defined route and timeframe, while the Puits Durand headframe, the Chapelle Saint-Sauveur-du-Puy, and the Grand Café Joucla each offer different historical connections.

The Randonnée de l'Arboretum de l'Espaze

The Randonnée de l'Arboretum de l'Espaze is an 11-kilometre circular hike in Camplong. It takes about four hours and is rated moderate. These three key details answer different questions: the distance indicates the length of the route, the approximate duration helps with planning your day, and the difficulty rating conveys the level of challenge. At this length, the hike is more of a standalone activity than a short addition between other attractions.

The route passes through the Monts-d'Orb state forest, known for its Corsican Laricio pine plantations. It crosses the Espaze via a wooden footbridge. The pine plantations and the wooden bridge provide two specific landscape points of reference; they also distinguish the hike from the chapel and headframe's historical themes.

Mining history at Puits Durand

The Chevalement du Puits Durand is the still-visible headframe of a former coal mine. The shaft was sunk to a depth of 98 metres between 1873 and 1876. This combination of headframe, timeframe, and depth makes the industrial connection concrete: it is not just a visible structure, but a deep shaft from the area's former coal-mining industry. Puits Durand was one of the Graissessac coalfield's ten deep shafts. This also places the individual headframe within the wider mining history of the coalfield.

Chapelle Saint-Sauveur-du-Puy

The Chapelle Saint-Sauveur-du-Puy can also be understood in terms of its architectural history and location. It lies between Camplong and Graissessac, on a mountain overlooking the valleys of the Mare and the Espaze. Its Romanesque and Gothic elements date from different building phases: the nave dates from the 12th century and the choir from the 13th century. This distinction in time helps prevent the building from being read as a single stylistic phase; the parts mentioned point to two consecutive centuries. In the 13th century, Saint-Sauveur-du-Puy and Notre-Dame-de-Camplong seem to have been the seats of a joint parish.

Another chapter in local history

The Joucla family founded the Grand Café Joucla in 1898. Unlike the headframe and the chapel, the focus here is not a historical building phase, but the founding of a café by a specifically named family.
