Corneilhan: Hiking, Wine Country and History
Accommodation in Corneilhan
If you want to combine outdoor activities with local history and wine country, Corneilhan offers several themes to consider when planning your trip. The OENORANDO® “Les Hauts de Corneilhan” is a hiking loop, while “Le Tour des Vignobles” is a mountain biking circuit. Other highlights include Saint-Léonce Church, Sainte-Marie Chapel and a historical treasure hunt in the village. First, consider whether hiking, cycling or culture will be the main focus of your stay.
Hiking Through the Vineyards
The OENORANDO® “Les Hauts de Corneilhan” is an easy 11 km hiking loop. It takes 3 hours and 30 minutes, giving you a clear idea of how long the walk will take. The route passes through vineyards and offers panoramic views of Corneilhan and its wine country. Along the way, you may spot European bee-eater nests and elusive ocellated lizards. Before setting out, check official information about route conditions and safety restrictions, as both may change.
Mountain Biking
“Le Tour des Vignobles” is a very easy 10.5 km mountain biking loop in Corneilhan. It gives families the chance to discover the village’s heritage and the changing colours of the wine country throughout the seasons. The distances are close: 11 km for the hiking loop and 10.5 km by mountain bike. Your choice will therefore also depend on how you want to get around, the difficulty level and the theme of the route.
Church, Chapel and Local History
The formerly fortified village of Corneilhan preserves many traces of a distant past. Saint-Léonce Church features wall frescoes painted in the 1960s by Nicolaï Greschny, an artist originally from Estonia. The church terrace offers panoramic views over the Orb plain. The church thus brings together wall art and views of the landscape. Sainte-Marie Chapel, also known as the Chapel of the Free Schools, was built in 1892. Those interested in local history can encounter traces of the former fortifications, as well as art and historic buildings.
Plan a Treasure Hunt and Wine Tasting
“Sur les traces des Anciens” is a historical treasure hunt in the village. If you want to plan your stay around it, confirm current availability with the municipality in advance. This lets you consider the activity when planning without assuming it will definitely be available.
Domaine Emile et Rose offers a visit to its vineyards and cellars, followed by a tasting of wines and local products. Visits are by reservation and subject to availability. If you would like to include this in your trip plans, be sure to arrange your reservation in advance.
Getting to the Starting Point
The starting point for the “Le Tour des Vignobles” loop is about a nine-minute walk, or 829 m, from the CORNEILHAN – LA POMPE bus stop. This distance refers to the starting point of the loop. Check bus routes and stop regulations before travelling.
