Gabian brings together a historic town centre, traces of its oil history, a water heritage and a wine estate. This offers different themes to consider when choosing a destination for your hotel stay: the circulade at the confluence of the Thongue and Lène, a signposted walking route, the Font de l’Oli and the La Resclauze site. The town’s history, industrial past and wine can thus be considered as separate interests for a trip to Gabian.

Townscape and walking route

Gabian is a circulade at the confluence of the Thongue and Lène. The town is therefore characterised both by a named settlement form and by its location on two waterways. There is a signposted walking route in the historic centre. It gives you a clear guide for exploring the town centre, while the circulade and confluence describe the broader character of the place. Gabian thus combines a clear destination in the town centre with a wider connection to the landscape.

Font de l’Oli and oil history

The former Font de l’Oli oil spring was listed as a historic monument by decree on 7 November 2016. It comprises a ruined hut, a network of tunnels and two silted-up basins. The combination of its protected status and the named remains offers two different perspectives on the oil history: its official recognition and the physical traces on site. Font de l’Oli is less than one kilometre south of Gabian. For travellers interested in the industrial past, the former oil spring can serve as a distinct focus when planning a trip.

La Resclauze and the water supply

The spring at La Resclauze supplied Béziers with water through a water intake and a Roman aqueduct. This historic supply can be understood as a sequence of related elements: the spring marked the source, the intake collected the water, and the aqueduct carried it to Béziers. The La Resclauze site on the Sauveplaine plateau is one of Gabian’s attractions. La Resclauze is the spring site; Béziers is the place it supplied. Unlike the Font de l’Oli, the focus here is on the former water supply rather than oil history.

Wine and other visits

The Domaine de Cadables wine estate produces wines bearing the IGP Languedoc designation and welcomes visitors. This makes wine-growing a distinct theme alongside Gabian’s historical attractions. Product designations can change over time; if the IGP designation matters to your travel plans, check it before your trip. The Musée du Pétrole is located in Gabian town hall.

Planning visits

When planning, keep the different visitor information in mind: there is a signposted route in the historic centre, visits to the wine estate are by appointment, and you should check in advance whether the Musée du Pétrole can be visited. Arrange your appointment at the wine estate before you arrive.
