La Grande Motte combines a distinctive architectural history with a nautical focus and guided experiences on a range of themes. When choosing a hotel, it’s worth deciding in advance what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to learn about the town’s urban planning, experience its marina and seaside, or explore art and nature? The town’s history and activities offer practical starting points.

Urban planning and architecture

Architect Jean Balladur was responsible for the complete design of La Grande Motte’s urban planning and architecture. The overall plan and individual buildings are therefore part of a shared architectural vision. In 2010, the entire urban ensemble received the “Patrimoine du XXe siècle” label, which has since been replaced by the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label.

A prominent landmark is the La Grande Pyramide. It is considered a symbol of La Grande Motte and a synthesis of Balladur’s architectural and philosophical work. Exploring this building also offers a glimpse of the ideas behind the wider urban concept. The guided tour “La Grande Motte, Cité des sables” introduces Balladur’s architectural project and the symbolism of modern seaside architecture.

Marina and nautical perspective

The Port de La Grande-Motte has 1,500 berths. The town took shape around the marina, developed its identity and strengthened its nautical focus in the shelter of the Bay of Aigues-Mortes. The marina is therefore both a tangible part of the destination and a reference point in its urban development.

The Akila sailing centre offers a different perspective, with sailing trips accompanied by a skipper. From the sea, you can take in the landscape of La Grande Motte. This brings two distinct aspects into view: the town’s development around the marina and the view of its landscape from the water.

Guided experiences by theme

The guided experience “La Grande Motte à vélo” uses nearly 25 kilometres of routes closed to motor traffic to explore the town’s architecture, symbolism and environment. It brings several of the town’s themes together in a cycling experience. If you’re particularly interested in Balladur’s design, you can compare it with the focus of the “La Grande Motte, Cité des sables” tour, which explores the architectural project and the symbolism of modern seaside architecture.

Other guided tours focus on art and biodiversity. On “À la découverte de la presqu’île du Ponant”, you can explore these themes with an ecologist. The family experience “Que laisse la mer sur son rivage?” introduces children aged 6 to 10 to marine deposits washed ashore, coastal vegetation and wildlife, accompanied by an environmental guide. An adult must accompany them.

Choose the focus of your stay

For planning your trip, the experiences can be distinguished by their content: from the overall architectural design to the landscape viewed from the sea, as well as art and nature. Consider which of these perspectives interests you most during your stay. When choosing a guided tour, you can also take its particular theme into account.
