Maraussan: Wine Culture and History
Accommodation in Maraussan
If you are interested in local history, winegrowing and routes through the countryside, Maraussan offers several specific points of interest. These include an old village with cobbled lanes and a washhouse, the history of the church and château, the Vignerons Libres cooperative winery and a wine trail. These different themes can help you choose the focus of your stay.
Village History and Religious Buildings
You can explore the old village along its cobbled lanes and past a washhouse. The history of the Church of Saint Symphorien also tells of different eras in the village: between the 9th and 11th centuries, a feudal château surrounded by fortifications stood on its site. The church developed from the former château chapel through successive extensions. The same site therefore brings together traces of an earlier fortification and the church’s later architectural history.
The Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Providence adds another point of historical interest. It dates back to 1685 and was inaugurated in 1688. It underwent extensive renovation in 1988 and restoration in 2014. The chapel is also a stopping point for many hikers. If you are interested in religious buildings, the chapel’s history and the development of Saint Symphorien offer two distinct points of historical interest.
Routes and Views of the Countryside
You can discover the Mediterranean flora and vineyards of Maraussan along the wine trail. The Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Providence is a stopping point for many hikers; the trail and the chapel are therefore separate points of interest for a walking holiday. No information about walking time or difficulty is provided.
The former railway line through Maraussan is now part of the Voie Verte, which continues onward from Maraussan. The landscape also has a geological history: Maraussan was built on one of the terraces formed during the Quaternary glaciations. A small wooded park by the church offers open views of Béziers and the Orb plain. The garden behind the apse of the Church of Saint Symphorien was created on the former cemetery site and also overlooks the Orb plain. The park also offers views of Béziers, while the garden is chiefly notable for its location behind the apse and its former use as a cemetery.
Wine Culture and Château de Perdiguier
Two dates are significant for the Vignerons Libres: the cooperative winery in Maraussan was founded in 1901 as France’s first winegrowers’ cooperative; the Vignerons Libres’ winemaking cellar was built in 1905. The “La ronde des caves” route starts at the historic cooperative winery, in front of the Vignerons Libres’ gable. This lets you connect the cooperative’s history with a specific starting point for the route.
Another historic building is Château de Perdiguier, a 14th-century feudal château in Maraussan. A guided tour includes two rooms and the courtyard of honour. For 2026, the scheduled period is from January 1 to December 31; confirm the arrangements before travelling. The estate’s red, white and rosé wines, as well as Perdiguier honeys, are tasted and sold at the château. Product availability may change, so check what is on offer before your visit.
For planning your trip, the distinction is clear: the church, chapel and château focus on local and architectural history; the winery, the “La ronde des caves” route and the tastings lead you to the theme of wine. If you would rather focus on the countryside and outdoor activities, the wine trail and the Voie Verte offer other specific points of interest. Choose the focus that best matches your interest in Maraussan, then look for a hotel for your stay.
