Montarnaud combines historic buildings with garrigue to the south and a Way of St James route that runs through the village. If you are planning a stay, its building history, landscape and regular weekly events offer different points of reference for deciding on your trip.

Château and architectural history

The Château de Montarnaud was listed in its entirety as a Monument historique by decree of 9 December 2015. Despite changes in the 19th century, it retains the appearance and features of a medieval castle. The main building is rectangular, with four round corner towers and a square courtyard. This layout makes it possible to distinguish the medieval form from later alterations.

The Château stands on a rocky rise overlooking the plain of the Mosson springs. Its architecture and setting in the landscape are among the building’s defining features. Montarnaud’s history also includes the Ancienne église Notre-Dame du Fort, a former castle chapel. It was listed as a Monument historique by decree of 15 December 1992. The two dates refer to different buildings: the Château is listed as a whole, while the church is identified as a former castle chapel.

The Tour de l’Horloge also has a specific technical feature: its clock mechanism still works, and its two weights are wound by hand with a crank every ten days. If you are planning a visit specifically to see this mechanism, confirm that it is working on site. A fountain built in 1860 also stands in the village square. Its narrow, triangular pyramid shape makes it a distinctive feature of the village’s history.

Garrigue and the Way of St James

Le Mas Dieu is a 540-hectare expanse of garrigue south of Montarnaud. The area has remarkable diversity of garrigue fauna and flora and is open to grazing. Its size, natural diversity and use together define its character.

The Way of St James, Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, offers another way to orient yourself in the area: the GR 653 passes through Montarnaud. If you plan to include this route in your trip, check current trail conditions before setting out. The route information and details about the landscape at Le Mas Dieu are separate points of reference for planning; they should not be understood as one and the same route offering.

Market and tastings

Montarnaud’s traditional market takes place every Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Place de l’Esplanade. The organic producer Le Potager de Laurence is among the vendors, offering vegetables, fruit, aromatic plants, vegetable seedlings, flowers and honey. Individual vendors’ participation may change. If you are coming specifically for this stall, check that it will be there before your visit.

Mas Dieu Village offers wine tastings every Thursday evening, accompanied by charcuterie, cheese or other local products. It also offers regional specialities from local producers; wines from Mas Dieu Village can also be tasted with charcuterie, cheese or other local products. As tasting details may change, it is advisable to check the current schedule before visiting.

The two food-related offerings have clearly different schedules: the market is on Fridays between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., while the wine tastings take place on Thursday evenings. If either one is a deciding factor for your trip, plan your stay for the appropriate day of the week and check the latest details.
