Montaud offers several different points of interest to consider when planning a stay: medieval architectural history, walks around the village, marked trails and a winegrowing tradition with a regional reach. If you are looking for a hotel in Montaud, these themes can help you choose how to explore the destination according to your interests. It is important not to treat them as interchangeable: the architecture walk and the educational trail offer different insights from a viewpoint route; Château de Montlaur is not a sightseeing destination because access is expressly prohibited.

Architectural history and access

The church of Montaud dates from the 13th century. Château de Montlaur is listed in the register of Monuments historiques. Its history includes a transformation: it was built as a military fortress in the 11th century and had become a residential château by the early 16th century. The church and the château therefore represent different historical points of reference: a church dating to the Middle Ages and a fortress whose function changed over the centuries. However, access is the key factor for your travel plans. The château is privately owned, and access is prohibited because the surroundings are dangerous. So do not plan to visit the château, and check the visiting conditions before your trip.

Walks and marked trails

The intercommunal educational trail at Serre-Rond was created in collaboration with Montaud. Eleven themed panels cover the forest, garrigue and the risk of forest fires. Garrigue is a Mediterranean scrubland and, alongside the forest, represents a distinct vegetation theme; the risk of forest fires offers a different focus. The Sentier des crêtes in Montaud is a marked trail with striking views over the plain and the coast. The Sentier du Serre-Rond leads hikers to the peak of the same name between Saint-Drézéry and Montaud. The three trails therefore have different focuses: themed panels, views over the plain and coast, and a named peak as a destination.

A walk through the village passes more than a hundred wells, fountains and wayside crosses; the exact route may change. The architecture walk takes you to old buildings, passageways and narrow streets. These village walks therefore differ: the first connects many individual architectural and roadside features, while the second focuses on the village’s historic architecture. Passageways and narrow streets broaden the view beyond individual buildings to include routes and the spaces between them in the village landscape.

Winegrowing in Montaud and the region

The cooperative winery in Montaud has been operating since 1938 and promotes local produce. Les Celliers du Val des Pins is based in Montaud and brings together a 600-hectare winegrowing area around the municipalities of Montaud, Saint-Bauzille de Montmel, Sussargues, Saint-Drézéry and Castries. The area figure therefore refers to land around five municipalities, not to Montaud alone. This distinguishes the cooperative winery’s local activity from the broader regional scope of the winegrowing area; together, they illustrate different scales of the wine tradition.
