Quarante brings together early Romanesque architecture, archaeological collections and water engineering along the Canal du Midi. This offers a choice of different themes when planning your visit: the history of the Abbey Church of Sainte-Marie, the archaeological museum’s broad time span, and routes that focus on the landscape or individual historic structures.

Abbey Church and Historic Water Engineering

The Abbey Church of Sainte-Marie was first consecrated in 982 and is considered an important example of early Languedoc Romanesque architecture. Its treasury also contains a 3rd-century sarcophagus. The abbey church thus brings together two distinct historical points of reference: the church’s early consecration and an artefact dated much earlier.

Individual and group tours of the abbey church are offered in French and English. As visitor arrangements may change, check the latest information before planning your visit.

Another notable structure is the Canal Bridge. Construction began in 1693; the three-arched structure carries the waters of the La Quarante beneath the Canal du Midi. The structure is also known as the double aqueduct of the Rebaut and as “La Birouge” or “La Tine”; it was most recently restored by the Bâtiments de France. Its function is clear at the crossing of the waterways: the waters of the La Quarante flow beneath the Canal du Midi. The Canal Bridge is therefore a distinct subject alongside the abbey church’s religious architectural history.

Archaeology and Capitelles

The Quarante Archaeological Museum presents a collection spanning from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Periods represented include the Chalcolithic, the Iron Age, and Gallo-Roman, Visigothic and Early Medieval times. This broad time span offers a different way to explore the history of the area than the abbey church’s single, clearly dated consecration: the museum focuses on a collection of finds from several periods.

A guided tour is available by appointment. It includes the archaeological museum, the Museum of Sacred Art and the abbey church. If you would like to visit all three together, making an appointment in advance is an important part of planning.

Capitelles are also among the local building types: domed huts made of dry stone masonry, meaning stones laid without mortar. In the past, they served as temporary shelters for small landowners—for themselves, their tools and their agricultural produce. While the abbey church and Canal Bridge relate to religious architecture and water engineering, respectively, the capitelles reflect earlier practical uses in everyday agricultural life.

Walking Routes and Countryside

The Les Berges du Canal circular walk starts in Quarante, is 13 km long, takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes, and is rated easy. It passes through a landscape of vineyards and the Canal du Midi. Its length and approximate duration help you gauge how much time to allow; trail conditions may change seasonally. Check the latest conditions before setting out.

From the QUARANTE – Collège bus stop, you can reach the circular walk in less than ten minutes on foot. As bus services and stop arrangements may change, check the latest connections if you plan to use this access point.

Another destination along a route is the Château des Uyères ruins, hidden among the oak trees. The Croix de Juillet route passes by them. The green Camin’Art route, in turn, crosses Quarante and connects Capestang and the Canal du Midi with the former Cruzy railway station, which has been converted into a restaurant. The routes thus differ in their stated focus: Les Berges du Canal is described by its circular layout, length and duration; the Château ruins are a highlight along the Croix de Juillet route; and Camin’Art is described in terms of the places it connects.
