Roujan: Churches, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Roujan
In Roujan, historic buildings, a distinctive landscape and a circular cycling route that passes through the town come together. In the historic centre stands an imposing 14th-century tower. The gateway of the former Saint Laurent entrance has also been preserved. The Chapelle Saint-Nazaire and the Église Saint-Laurent add two churches with different architecture and building histories. Visitors interested in local history will find several distinct examples of historic architecture here.
Churches, Tower and Gateway
The Chapelle Saint-Nazaire is a fully preserved pre-Romanesque church of the Visigothic tradition, with the exception of its roof frame. It has been classified as a historic monument by decree since 9 July 1981. Its classification as pre-Romanesque and its connection to the Visigothic tradition describe the building, while the date indicates its protected status. The chapel is therefore a special highlight for travellers interested in early religious architecture.
The Église Saint-Laurent in Roujan is also a protected historic church. It was listed by decree dated 14 April 1954. Its construction phases include the final quarter of the 13th century as well as the 14th, 18th and 19th centuries. These dates show a building history spanning several centuries and add a chronological perspective to its protected status. Together with the Chapelle Saint-Nazaire, Saint-Laurent illustrates how churches from different historical contexts can be found in Roujan.
Château-Abbaye de Cassan
The Château-Abbaye de Cassan houses a 12th-century Romanesque church, a remnant of the former priory. You can stroll through the garden and enjoy an impressive view of the building. Guided tours for organised groups are available year-round by reservation. The visits differ in how they need to be planned: the view of the building is an attraction in its own right during a garden stroll; for a group tour, you should arrange your reservation in advance.
Landscape and Cycling
Roujan is surrounded by seven small hills locally known as “pechs”. The local term is part of the landscape’s description and gives the hills a specific name. Cyclists also have a named point of reference: the Boucle cyclo n°3 circular cycling route passes through Roujan and other villages. If you plan to follow the route, check its current course before setting out, as the route may change.
Wine Sales and Practical Routes
The Les Caves Molière Caveau de Roujan sells wine by the bottle, loose and in bag-in-box format. If you would like to buy wine there, you can choose from these sales formats; check the current selection before your visit. The ROUJAN – Mairie bus stop is less than a ten-minute walk from the Caveau. This distance provides a useful reference point when planning your journey. It is best to check current connections before travelling.
