Saint-Christol: Wine, Hiking Trails and Pilgrimage Route
Accommodation in Saint-Christol
Saint-Christol combines hiking trails, the route of the Way of St. James through the village and a long history of wine-growing. When planning your trip, you can choose from different points of interest: paths through wine-growing hillsides, crosses in a variety of architectural styles, views of named landscape landmarks and historic buildings. Visits and bookable e-bike tours also offer different ways to explore. If you are looking for a hotel, these activities can help you choose a location based on the interests you want to shape your stay.
Hiking Trails and Pilgrimage Route
The 8 km Les coteaux de Saint-Christol route is a family-friendly hiking trail through the wine-growing hillsides. At 15.6 km, the Parcours des Chevaliers de Malte is nearly twice as long. It passes through Saint-Christol and by numerous crosses in a variety of architectural styles. The two routes therefore differ in both length and theme: one focuses on the wine-growing hillsides, while the other features architecturally diverse crosses. The Bois de Lérins route offers views of the Cévennes and Pic Saint-Loup, adding a scenic option to the choice of routes.
Since 2015, the GR653, the Via d’Arles route of the Way of St. James, has passed through Saint-Christol. The route is continuous and well marked, can be walked for much of the year, and can be walked in both directions to Rome and Santiago de Compostela. If you plan to walk it, check the current trail conditions before setting out.
Local History and Wine-Growing
On Place du Christ, you can see the entrance portico of the former Commandery castle beside the former chapel. The chapel and portico offer two specific points of reference for exploring the village’s architectural history. Wine-growing also has a long history: in Saint-Christol, it has been known for its outstanding quality since the 12th century. Wine is therefore more than a focus for individual visits; it is also part of the historical perspective on Saint-Christol.
Viavino welcomes visitors to the heart of the Pays de Lunel for wine tourism. Garrigue, pine trees and vineyards shape the surrounding landscape. Its connection to the Pays de Lunel adds a distinct regional dimension: if you are interested in wine tourism, you can consider this landscape perspective alongside the history of wine-growing in Saint-Christol.
