Accommodation in Saint-Maurice-Navacelles
Saint-Maurice-Navacelles combines hiking options with striking landscapes and historical landmarks. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different route lengths and time estimates: they range from a moderately difficult circular hike with around three and a half hours of walking time to a multi-day tour. The Baume Auriol viewpoint and places such as the Château de Saint-Maurice and the Église de l’Assomption de Navacelles each offer their own distinctive appeal.
Choose hikes by length and character
The GR® de Pays Tour du Larzac Méridional is a moderately difficult 58-kilometre circular hike connected with Saint-Maurice-Navacelles. From Saint-Maurice-Navacelles, the route heads north to Navacelles, following the GR 7 along the way. It is described as a three-day hike for regular hikers. The distance, circular format and classification as a multi-day hike give you a clear idea of the scale of this tour.
A shorter alternative is the moderately difficult Randonnée des Rajols. This 14-kilometre circular hike passes through the landscape and offers views of the meanders of the Vis and the hollow of the Cirque de Navacelles. The estimated walking time for this route is around 3 hours and 30 minutes. Compared with the 58-kilometre tour, this provides a very different timeframe for planning your hike; the stated walking time is an approximate guide.
The route to the Moulins de la Foux also offers different ways to explore the area. It follows a botanical trail to the mills and then crosses the Vis. One option starts at the Baume Auriol viewpoint and follows the Chemin du Facteur. Near the bridge over the Vis, this path rejoins the main route. The viewpoint itself is in Saint-Maurice-Navacelles. The Site House Baume Auriol provides information about excursions on foot, on horseback, by mountain bike and by electric bicycle.
Landscapes and historic sites
The viewpoints along the Randonnée des Rajols look out over two distinctive landscape features: the meanders of the Vis and the hollow of the Cirque de Navacelles. The hiking information therefore offers more than just route lengths to those interested in the surrounding area; it also provides a specific connection to the landscape. Baume Auriol adds another point of orientation as a viewpoint within the commune; the Site House shares its name and provides information about excursions using different modes of transport.
The Château de Saint-Maurice offers a glimpse into the long history of the area: the first château was mentioned in 1280. The base of the square keep and parts of the 14th-century substructures have survived. The different dates refer to different aspects of the building: 1280 is the date the first château was mentioned, while the surviving structural elements are attributed to the 14th century. A keep is the main tower of a castle; here, the remains specifically named are its base and parts of the substructures.
The Église de l’Assomption de Navacelles dates from the late 19th century and is located in the Cirque de Navacelles. Public access is usually restricted due to structural damage. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether access is possible. This way, the church remains an interesting historical destination without requiring you to assume that unrestricted public access is available.
The Dolmen de la Prunadère is located in the hamlet of Prunarède. It is known for its good state of preservation and for the excavations carried out there in 2010. The château, church and dolmen differ both in their historical context and in their architectural form: alongside the remains of a medieval château, there is a church from the late 19th century and a well-preserved dolmen. Together, these sites offer another reason to visit, in addition to the hikes and landscape views.
