Compare wine trails and hikes

OENORANDO® LE SENTIER DU VIN DES POETES is a very easy, 2 km circular route that takes about an hour to walk. The trail winds between vineyards and poetry, introducing the people who make the wines of Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian. Winegrowing and the producers’ stories are therefore the focus of this shorter route.

OENORANDO® DES VIGNES AU ROCHER DES VIERGES takes more time: this moderately difficult circular route is 12 km long and takes about four hours to walk. It starts at the cooperative winery, passes through vineyards and garrigue, and climbs to the Roc des Deux Vierges, the highest point of the massif. The two routes are clearly distinguished by time and difficulty: about an hour for a very easy 2 km loop, or around four hours for the moderately difficult 12 km hike. Route information and trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Landscape around the Rocher des Vierges

The Rocher des Vierges lies northwest of the commune. From there, panoramic views extend across the Hérault plain to the sea, and there is also a bird’s-eye view of the red Ruffes of Saint-Guiraud and Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian. Several walking trails allow you to explore the Rocher des Vierges. The views and trails offer a different focus from the two wine loops.

The diversity of natural habitats is also part of the character of Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian. These include fallow land, garrigue, maquis, deciduous and coniferous forests, wet meadows and Ruffes. This variety of habitats adds further facets to the landscape beyond the named viewpoints.

Architectural history in the church and château

The parish church of Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian combines structural elements from several centuries. The choir and nave date from the 14th century, the north chapel from the 15th century, and the stair tower from the 16th century. These different dates make the building’s history tangible: not all of its parts belong to the same construction phase.

Medieval fortification remains are preserved on the grounds of the Château des Deux-Vierges. These include a round tower, a castle chapel, a square tower and a massive wall along the eastern edge of the plateau. The church and château thus offer two different points of interest for visitors interested in cultural history: the elements of a religious building constructed over several centuries, and the surviving remains of a fortification.

Guided visits and wine tastings

Les Z’Anim’O is an educational farm. During guided visits, you can see, pet and feed some of the animals; horse riding is also sometimes available. Visits are by advance reservation only. If you plan to include this activity, book ahead and check the current visiting arrangements.

The wine experiences each have their own focus. Domaine Virgile Joly welcomes visitors year-round and offers themed cellar tours and wine tastings. Fonjoya sells wine at its cellar and offers free tastings in Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian. The experiences therefore differ: Domaine Virgile Joly focuses on themed cellar tours and tastings, while Fonjoya combines wine sales with free tastings. Visitor offerings may change; check the current conditions in advance.

First decide which of these themes interests you most, and take the approximate walking time and the reservation requirement for Les Z’Anim’O into account when planning.
