Saint-Thibéry – Heritage and Basalt Landscape
Accommodation in Saint-Thibéry
Saint-Thibéry combines historic heritage with a striking geological landscape. The abbey church, bridges and fort offer different historical perspectives; Les Orgues Basaltiques add geological history and panoramic views. Guided tours, an annual summer festival and a leisure activity with a specified duration offer further options that can be planned in different ways.
Historic heritage: the abbey church, bridges and fort
The abbey church of Saint-Thibéry was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Its furnishings include polychrome marble, as well as woodwork and choir stalls from the 18th century. The Benedictine abbey is protected as a Monument historique. The abbey church thus brings together a rebuilding and furnishings from different centuries.
The bridges, too, date from different periods: the Pont Vieux was built in 1575 and repaired in 1742 after being damaged by a flood of the Thongue. The so-called Pont dite « romaine », by contrast, is a medieval bridge on the Via Domitia, built along a pilgrimage route.
The Moulin à bled is a medieval grain mill. The tower of Saint-Thibéry was built in 1509 by Jean IV du Puy.
The fort site contains evidence of continuous settlement from the 5th century BC through the Middle Ages. This long time span sets the archaeological perspective at the fort apart from the individual construction dates of the bridges and tower.
Guided tours, digital discovery and festival dates
Guided tours of the historic heritage are offered in Saint-Thibéry throughout the year; a guide introduces visitors to the history and heritage. A digital application developed in 2022 helps visitors discover the Pont de Saint-Thibéry. Check its current availability before using it.
The Saint-Thibéry Jazz Festival takes place every summer, around mid-August; its date may vary from year to year. Check the festival dates for the year of your trip. For planning purposes, year-round guided tours contrast with a festival held in summer on a date that varies annually.
Plan a visit to the basalt landscape and a leisure activity
Les Orgues Basaltiques formed about 650,000 years ago, when a lava flow cooled during an eruption of the Monts Ramus volcanoes. At Les Orgues Basaltiques, a walk offers a 360° panorama over the Espinouse Mountains, the foothills of the Larzac, Mont Ramus and the surrounding villages.
Pédalo-Rail® is a leisure activity lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes, for families or friends, along the former railway line from Saint-Thibéry to Pézenas. The total distance is 6 km: 3 km there and 3 km back. The two outings differ in what they offer for planning your time: the walk focuses on the panorama, while Pédalo-Rail® has a specified duration and out-and-back distance. Availability may vary by season; check for your planned dates.
