Discover Soubès
Accommodation in Soubès
If you choose a place to stay based on specific activities, two themes stand out in Soubès: historic sights and hiking. The Sentier botanique de Font d'Amans can be assessed by distance, elevation gain and approximate duration; the Trail du Bout du Monde features changing trail sections and an old Roman road. Medieval streets also invite you to explore the village on foot.
Historic traces in Soubès
The fortifications of Soubès were probably built in the 12th century. The main masonry of the Chapelle Saint-Cyprien also dates from the 12th century. The chapel has a gallery supported by a rib vault; the gallery probably dates from the 15th century. A rib vault is a vaulted structure whose ribs divide the surface. The Chapelle therefore brings together different historical periods: the main masonry from the 12th century and the probably later gallery.
The Soubès war memorial to the First World War was created in 1919; the sculptor was Paul Dardé. In terms of chronology, the memorial is considerably later than the fortifications and the chapel's main masonry. Its creation in the early 20th century adds a different historical reference point alongside the medieval features.
Hiking with different focuses
The Sentier botanique de Font d'Amans is an easy 2.5 km circular trail with 126 m of elevation gain and a duration of about two hours; it starts and ends in Soubès. The trail passes through three different ecosystems: a mixed pine forest, a dry Mediterranean slope and a cool valley beside a stream. Signposted plants introduce the local flora. The circuit therefore combines practical planning details with a variety of natural and botanical features. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Trail du Bout du Monde starts in the village of Soubès. It alternates between technical and easy-running sections, follows an old Roman road and reaches the heights of the Cirque du Bout du Monde. The trail is not specifically marked; downloading the GPX track is recommended for navigation.
The trails' different features can help you choose: the Sentier botanique is rated easy and offers an approximate duration as well as a botanical focus. The Trail du Bout du Monde is characterized by its mix of technical and easy-running sections, the Roman road and the need to navigate using a GPX track. This lets you compare the two trails based on the features actually described.
Exploring the village on foot
You can also explore Soubès itself on foot: its medieval streets invite you to wander. The Sainte-Marie Madeleine church is another of the village's sights. The streets and church add their own local points of interest to the hikes—one invites you along medieval streets, the other is a named place of worship. The options for a stay therefore range from buildings with different historical associations to trails with distinct botanical or route-related characteristics.
