Vérargues – The Way of St. James, Muscat and local history
Accommodation in Vérargues
Vérargues brings together the Way of St. James, winemaking and the Muscat tradition with a rich local history. If you are planning a trip here, you can explore these themes as distinct points of interest: routes, church architecture and local wine origins. This can help you decide what brings you here before you look for a hotel.
Routes through vineyard hills and pine forests
The GR653, the Arles route of the Way of St. James, has passed through Vérargues since 2015. It is continuous and well signposted. As routes can change, check the latest conditions before setting out. If the Way of St. James is the main focus of your trip, Vérargues gives you a clearly identified point of reference along the route.
The Randonnée des Châteaux du Muscat de Lunel route runs through vineyard hills among the vines of A.O.P. Muscat de Lunel and pine forests. It passes by Château de la Devèze and along the imposing buildings of Château de Pouget. Château de la Devèze is on the RD110 in Vérargues; Château de Pouget is in the village, amid the Muscat de Lunel vineyards. The landscape and buildings offer different points of reference along the route.
The Voie douce is another option to consider when planning your trip: it can be used by cyclists of all levels. If you are deciding how to spend your time in the village, you can choose between routes and cycling as possible points of focus.
Church and local history
The church of Vérargues was built between 1892 and 1894. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is under the patronage of Saint Theodore and Saint Andrew. Its construction dates, dedication and patronage reflect different historical and religious aspects of the church.
Vérargues also shows evidence of Gallo-Roman settlement. The local heritage includes five crosses, most of them dating from the 19th century. Evidence of early settlement thus stands alongside later local memorials, placing the village’s history in more than one period.
Muscat de Lunel and local wine connections
Muscat de Lunel is a naturally sweet wine produced in the sandstone hills of Lunel, Lunel-Viel, Vérargues and Saturargues. Vérargues is at the heart of this production. The wine is therefore both rooted in the region and explicitly connected with the village.
The Vignerons du Muscat de Lunel cooperative has been based in Vérargues since 1957. The Cave Coopérative du Muscat de Lunel is on the Route de Lunel-Viel in the village. If you plan to visit these addresses, check the details in advance, as they may change. This will help you distinguish the regional wine tradition from the specific local connections of the cooperative and the cave.
Fête de Vérargues and when to visit
Camargue traditions are part of Vérargues’ history, region and culture. The Fête de Vérargues traditionally takes place on the last weekend of June and includes bull-related festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, you can use this weekend as a guide and check the dates for the relevant year in advance.
