Viols-le-Fort’s history brings together a medieval fortification and the much older Dolmen de la Draille. Also of note are houses with medieval foundations, a Romanesque foundation at the Église de l’Invention-de-Saint-Étienne, and the village’s inclusion in the Natura 2000 site “gorges de l'Hérault”. If you are looking for a hotel for a history-focused trip, these features provide a specific basis for choosing your destination: they range from the layout of the village to a prehistoric funerary monument.

The medieval fortification

At the beginning of the 15th century, during the Hundred Years’ War, the medieval fortification was built to protect residents from raids by the Routiers. It still encloses the heart of Viols-le-Fort today, making it a defining landmark in the centre of the village. The Porte du Fanabregol is the only entrance to the fortified complex. The three-storey tower served as the main entrance to the village. These functions are distinct: one describes access to the complex, while the other refers to the tower’s former role in providing access to the village.

The Tour du Fanabrégol has been protected as a historic monument since 19 June 2023. This date refers to its protection status, not to the construction of the much older fortification. This distinction helps place the fortification’s medieval origins and the monument’s later protection in their respective periods.

Architectural traces from different periods

The fortification also contains traces of the village’s building history: the houses preserve medieval foundations with numerous architectural details. The historic fabric is not limited to the complex as a whole, but extends down to the foundations of the houses. The Église de l’Invention-de-Saint-Étienne has a Romanesque foundation, providing a distinct architectural note alongside the medieval foundations of the houses.

The Dolmen de la Draille and its structure

The Dolmen de la Draille belongs to a much earlier period. It dates from the late Copper Age, around 3000 BC, and served as a communal, reusable burial site. This date is approximate, not an exact construction year. Several millennia separate the dolmen, dated to around 3000 BC, from the fortification, which dates to the early 15th century. The funerary monument is one of the few dolmens in the département still preserved in good condition.

Its features include a long entrance passage leading to an antechamber, a very low burial chamber and a capstone weighing around six tonnes. This makes it possible to distinguish the entrance, antechamber and burial chamber as separate parts of the monument; the low chamber and heavy capstone are also striking architectural features.

The Sentier des Drailles, developed as a hiking trail, leads from the village of Viols-le-Fort to the Dolmen de la Draille, which gives the trail its name. It thus provides a named link between the village and the prehistoric monument. Check local conditions before setting out, as route information can change.

Natural surroundings and getting there

Viols-le-Fort is part of the Natura 2000 site “gorges de l'Hérault”. This adds a landscape dimension to the area’s architectural and cultural history and offers another point to consider when choosing a destination if you would also like to explore the natural surroundings alongside the monuments.

Bus route 608 serves Viols-le-Fort; the stop is called Plan de l’Eglise. Check the current timetable before travelling. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether your main interest is the medieval fortification, the much older dolmen or the village’s location within the Natura 2000 site. Once you have decided on Viols-le-Fort as your destination, compare specific hotel offers based on your travel dates and personal requirements.
