Auroux lies on the eastern edge of the Margeride, a natural landscape and granite region. The deeply cut Chapeauroux Valley runs through the village. The landscape and events offer different points of reference for understanding Auroux as a travel destination: the defining features are a distinctive mountainous landscape, sporting events and notable traces of local history.

Landscape and municipal area

The landscape of the Margeride is characterized by rounded mountain terrain, meadows, fast-flowing streams, deep forests and granite blocks weathered smooth by the elements. These features describe the Margeride as a landscape; the Chapeauroux Valley is a separate geographical feature that runs through Auroux. Auroux is considered a mountain commune. The average altitude ranges from 900 m to 1,275 m at the western municipal boundary.

The municipal area also encompasses different landscape features: its northeastern part lies within the catchment area of Lac de Naussac. The villages of Briges and Naussac are part of this area. For orientation, both its location on the eastern edge of the Margeride and the fact that part of the commune lies within the catchment area of Lac de Naussac are relevant.

Getting there and finding your way

The C.D. 988 crosses Auroux from south to north; the C.D. 26 connects the village with Langogne. The nearest railway station is in Langogne, and the next one farther away is in Mende. If you plan to arrive by train, check current connections before travelling. The roads and stations mentioned provide reference points for planning, without specifying a particular journey time.

Sporting events and dates

The Amicale Motocycliste Chams Auroux has organized enduro races in Auroux since 1977. It also holds motorcycle rallies on the road in spring and autumn. The Galopeur Fou organizes a 12 km Christmas trail with 356 m of positive elevation gain. Its events also include the Endurathlon, which combines an 8.5 km mountain-bike circuit with a 3 km trail-running loop in the countryside.

The distances and disciplines distinguish the formats: the Christmas trail is listed as a 12 km trail with 356 m of positive elevation gain; the Endurathlon combines mountain biking and running, each with its own distance. This lets you consider the events according to the type of sport that interests you. Check the current dates and participation information separately before your trip.

The festival on 13 July and the festival in mid-August are also part of Auroux’s events calendar. The Comité des Fêtes d’Auroux organizes both occasions, with music and dancing under the village hall. These dates therefore differ from the seasonal motorcycle rallies held in spring and autumn. Check the event dates for your travel period before planning a visit.

Croix de Briges and Croix de Parpaillon

The Croix de Briges is one of the oldest crosses in Lozère. The year 1572 is inscribed at the foot of its shaft. Its construction combines a prismatic granite shaft with a basalt cross whose arms are fluted. The date, materials and form offer several specific features that describe the appearance of this cross.

Another route leads to the Croix de Parpaillon. It crosses the Chapeauroux on a bridge and passes through woodland, heathland and a fir forest. The Croix de Parpaillon is at the end of the path on the left. The two crosses thus offer different points of interest: the description of the Croix de Briges is shaped by its date and design, while the route to the Croix de Parpaillon is characterized by the landscape sections mentioned and the river crossing.
