Gatuzières is a destination whose character is revealed through the River Jonte, trails across the landscape and a historic building. When looking for a hotel, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: hiking, a mountain biking route, a visit to the church or a glimpse into a local brewery? The routes vary considerably in duration and distance. This makes it possible to assess during the planning stage whether a single excursion or a multi-day tour is a better fit for your stay.

The Jonte and hiking in Gatuzières

The Jonte is one of the main waterways that cross the commune. Hiking and cycling routes also pass through Gatuzières. For a day of hiking, “La forêt de l'Aigoual” offers a clear timeframe and distance: the circular route passes through the village, is 11.7 kilometres long and is listed as taking 4.5 hours. Along the way, the route passes through forests of gnarled beech trees. This combines a specified route with a distinctive woodland setting; if hiking is your main focus, you can treat these details as one element of your trip planning.

Beyond this route, the GR60 offers the option of reaching the summit of Aigoual in two hours. These two hours refer to the additional summit option, not the 4.5-hour circular hike. Check for any route changes before setting out.

Cycling routes with different timeframes

The cycling routes differ considerably in the time they take. The difficult “Hures - VTT n°6” route is a circular course of about three hours and 23.2 kilometres, and passes through Gatuzières. It crosses the Plateau du Causse Méjean, between open and wooded sections. It is considerably shorter than the also-difficult “Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT”: this route is listed as taking five days and covering 195.6 kilometres, and passes through Gatuzières, among other places. It can be completed on a mountain bike or an electrically assisted mountain bike. These are therefore a single circular course and a multi-day route, not two excursions of similar length. Check the latest route information before setting off.

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Church

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Church adds a distinct historical perspective to choosing where to visit. It was an old rural priory inhabited by a community of Benedictine canons until the Wars of Religion. The apse is the only Romanesque part of the church; the rest of the building was rebuilt after the devastation of the Wars of Religion in the 16th and 18th centuries. The interior is entirely painted and contains a complete set of wooden furnishings. The building’s history thus brings together Romanesque architecture and reconstruction after the Wars of Religion.

Brewery and seasonal visits

Les Brasseurs de la Jonte have been operating as a craft brewery in Gatuzières since the end of 2013. Tastings are available at the shop during the season. In July and August, a free tour of the production site is offered Monday to Friday at 5 p.m., with no reservation required. Check before travelling whether the tour falls within your travel dates. Tastings are also seasonal, but take place at the shop.
