Rieutort-De-Randon is a starting point for several named routes or is associated with them. They vary in length, elevation gain and stated duration. Truc de Fortunio, Lac de Charpal and Chapelle Saint-Férréol also provide specific reference points for planning your stay.

Compare routes by distance and time

The “La Chapelle Saint Férreol” route starts in Rieutort-de-Randon and leads to Chapelle Saint-Férréol. It is 19.8 kilometres long, rated moderate and listed as taking 6 hours and 25 minutes. If you want to consider difficulty and duration as well as distance when planning, all three details are provided for this route. The chapel is close to Lac de Charpal and is a clearly named destination on the route.

The “De Rieutort au lac Charpal – Trail n° 14” route is listed as 26 kilometres long, with an elevation gain and loss of 810 metres each. Compared with the 19.8-kilometre route to the chapel, it is 6.2 kilometres longer. The elevation figures offer an additional basis for comparing the two routes.

Explore by mountain bike and road

The “Tour du Lac de Charpal / St Féréol – VTT n° 4” starts at Place de l'église. The route covers 34.34 kilometres, with an elevation gain and loss of 700 metres each. The “Circuit familial – VTT n° 1” also starts at Place de l'église and leads to small villages around Rieutort-de-Randon. This gives you different types of mountain bike rides to choose from: one with a stated distance and elevation figures, and another whose destination is the villages around the town. Check the route details before setting out.

Another option is the road route “L'Air de Margeride,” which is associated with Rieutort-de-Randon. It takes five hours. This duration applies to the road route and should be distinguished from the 6 hours and 25 minutes stated for the hiking route to Chapelle Saint-Férréol. When comparing the different routes, take note of the route type and the duration given for each.

Truc de Fortunio and Lac de Charpal

At 1,552 metres, Truc de Fortunio is the highest point in the Margeride and overlooks Lac de Charpal. Orientation panels at Truc help you understand and find your way around the surrounding landscape. This brings together a specific high point, views of the lake and an opportunity to learn more about the landscape.

Chapelle Saint-Férréol is also close to Lac de Charpal. To walk from the lake to the chapel, cross the dam and then follow a path for 1.5 kilometres. This is a separate set of directions to the destination; the “La Chapelle Saint Férreol” hiking route, by contrast, starts in Rieutort-de-Randon and also leads to the chapel.

Église Saint-Julien in town

Another place to visit is the present-day Église Saint-Julien. It was built in the 19th century using large-format granite masonry. The church is open year-round and admission is free. If you would like to include a building in town alongside the named routes, this visit combines a look at local architecture with a clear practical advantage: access is not limited to a particular season.
