Vialas: Hiking, Climbing and Heritage
Accommodation in Vialas
Vialas offers hiking trails with different thematic focuses, a climbing area at Rocher de Trenze and cultural and historical attractions centered on the Temple de Vialas and the Bocard site. The area also belongs to two broader landscapes: Vialas has been part of the Cévennes National Park since 1970 and of the UNESCO-listed agro-pastoral landscapes since 2011. This allows you to take nature, sporting activities and history into account when considering the destination.
Hiking trails: landscape and time required
The Soleyrols loop runs alongside the Luech through a mineral-rich fault zone between schist and granite, near former mining sites. Geology and past mining form the shared theme here. The loop therefore appeals to travelers who are also interested in rocks and landscape history while hiking.
The Gourdouze trail passes through gorse heathland, along paved paths and across a landscape of striking granite boulders to the Rochers de Trenze. It starts in Vialas. This difficult, yellow-marked PR route is 14.2311 km long; the walking time is about six and a half hours. Steep sections and the recommendation that it is for experienced hikers make difficulty and duration important points when planning the route.
The Sentier de découverte de Vialas is designed for exploring the historic districts. It also offers a chance to discover the Temple de Vialas's distinctive history. This gives it a historical focus, while the Soleyrols loop is associated with geology and the mining landscape, and the Gourdouze trail stands out for its length, walking time and level of difficulty.
Climbing and other hiking options
The climbing area at Rocher de Trenze has 49 equipped routes. Grades range from 3C to 7B, and routes are 15 to 200 meters long. Grade and length are concrete points of comparison when choosing a route. The climbing area is intended for fit, properly equipped climbers; take this requirement into account when planning.
Gentiâne offers customizable hikes with donkeys: as a loop or point-to-point hike, as a day trip or a longer tour. The level of difficulty can also be adjusted. If this option suits your plans, check the current arrangements, as they may change.
History between the Temple and Bocard
The history of the Temple de Vialas can be traced to two dates: permission to build it was granted in 1612, and construction of the temple began in 1613. The chronology thus distinguishes the earlier decision from the subsequent start of construction.
The Bocard site is protected as a historic monument. In the 19th century, galena, a silver-bearing lead ore, was processed using machinery along the Sentier du Bocard. Alongside the Temple's construction history, ore processing is therefore a distinct historical focus. If you are deciding how to prioritize cultural topics during your stay, you can consider these two aspects separately.
