Cultural heritage from Vauban to mining

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Fortifications of Vauban comprises twelve components, including Mont-Louis and Villefranche-de-Conflent. The citadel of the Château des rois de Majorque was also built by Vauban. The département’s architectural heritage includes churches, chapels and religious buildings; its range extends from the Via Domitia to contemporary creations. Evidence of historic mining, iron metallurgy and Catalan forges can be found on and around the Canigou massif. Traditional pastoral heritage includes fountains, chapels, washhouses and shepherds’ shelters associated with earlier knowledge. Travel through Conflent and Cerdagne on the Train Jaune

The Train Jaune connects Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol through the landscapes of Conflent and Cerdagne. The service includes a ride in an open-sided carriage with views of the Pyrenean massifs; whether open-sided carriages are used may depend on operating conditions.
