Discover Cublac: Hotels and Mining History
Accommodation in Cublac
Between Landscapes
Cublac lies where three natural landscapes meet: Limousin, Périgord in the Vézère Valley, and Quercy on the Causse plateaus. The village is also at the foot of the first foothills of the Massif Central. This places the destination in several geographical contexts without assigning Cublac to just one region. It is a useful starting point when choosing a hotel: you can consider the village’s landscape setting and the themes you want to shape your stay. Mining is one of the local themes; nearby, there is also a nature trail with viewpoints. When planning, you can consider two questions separately: what kind of geographical setting are you looking for, and which themes should feature in your stay?
Getting to Cublac
The A20 motorway connects Cublac in a north–south direction, and the A89 in an east–west direction. Terrasson SNCF station is two kilometres from Cublac. The stated distance from Cublac to Brive-Souillac Airport is at least half an hour. These details use different measures: directions are given for the motorways, a distance for Terrasson, and a travel time for Brive-Souillac. Consider them in relation to your chosen route. Before travelling, check current connections and conditions so your plans suit your chosen route.
Mining History
Coal mining in Cublac began towards the end of the 18th century and ended in 1914. The historic shafts reached almost 200 metres deep; the deepest shaft reached 256 metres. This distinction matters: almost 200 metres describes the shafts in general, while 256 metres refers specifically to the deepest shaft. The use of the mined material is also part of the story: coal mined in Cublac was used by the glassworks in Le Lardin St Lazare. The connection to the glassworks adds a picture of how the coal was used beyond Cublac.
Notre Dame de la Cabane
Notre Dame de la Cabane also offers another perspective on Cublac’s past. The institution was founded in 1669 and initially served as a seminary. It later housed a private school and a teacher-training seminary; these successive uses ended in 1969. A comparison with mining reveals two different timelines: the educational institution’s history runs from its founding in 1669 until its uses ended in 1969, while coal mining ended in 1914.
Trails and Activities
A walking trail that starts beneath the covered market introduces visitors to Cublac’s mining history. Nearby, the Sentier des mines is a fairly easy nature trail with views of the Puits d’Yssandon and the Vézère Valley near Terrasson. The trails thus range from one that explores mining history to a nature trail with specific viewpoints. The “Terra Aventura: Pietra e Ignis” geocaching activity is located in Cublac. It is listed as available from 1 January to 31 December 2026; check current availability before your trip.
