Eyrein offers two clearly distinct ways to spend your stay: historic buildings and works of art, and hikes to viewpoints and through woodland. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the individual destinations and routes: architecture and history shape visits to cultural sites, while route length, duration, and landscape character are the specific features that distinguish the hikes.

Church, Art, and Local History

The Église Saint-Pierre is classified as a historic monument. This small building dates from the late 12th century and was altered particularly in the 13th and 16th centuries. Its dating makes the various phases of its architectural history tangible and gives interested visitors a specific time frame for the building’s changes.

Another religious work of art in Eyrein is the winged tabernacle: a protected, two-tiered work made of carved and gilded walnut wood from the 17th century. It was restored in 1961 and again in August 2016. Details about its material, design, and restoration give the object its own art-historical dimension; it should be considered as a distinct work in its own right.

The Fontaine Saint-Pierre has flowed into its granite basin since 1893. The basin and the long-established date make the fountain a special local testament. Together with the church and the tabernacle, these places show different facets of Eyrein’s religious and historical heritage.

La Jugie is also a point of interest for architectural history. The village on the road to Sédières and Clergoux forms a high-quality architectural ensemble. Guillemette de Rogier, sister of Pope Clement VI, lived there with her husband Jacques de La Jugie. In this way, local history is linked to a historically known resident by name and her family relationship.

At the exit from La Jugie, at the crossroads with the road to Chambon, stands the Croix des lépreux. The flower-shaped cross made of white granulite dates from the 15th century and bears six figures, including Christ and the Virgin Mary. Its material, form, location, and figures make it a small but distinct destination for anyone interested in historical figurative art.

Viewpoints and Hikes

Le Puy de la Tour reaches an elevation of 614 metres in Eyrein. Its summit offers a 360-degree panorama, and an orientation table complements the viewpoint. An easy 5-kilometre round-trip hike leads to the top. Those who choose a route primarily by length can compare this figure with the longer route to Étang de la Chèze.

The easy hike to Étang de la Chèze covers 10.8 kilometres and takes 2 hours 30 minutes. It starts in the centre of Eyrein, at the car park on Place de la mairie. Along the way, the route passes through beech, conifer, and birch forests. The two hikes therefore differ both in length and in their described landscape character. Check the route locally before setting out; route conditions may change.

A path on the edge of the village passes through a dense stand of oaks and chestnuts to the granite Rocher de la Rissière, located about 400 metres from the village. Visitors reach the summit via steps cut directly into the rock. Rocher de la Rissière has been classified as a protected natural site since 23 November 1933. Here, a roughly stated short distance from the village, a distinctive rock, and a clearly specified protection status come together.

Étang de Chabrière is listed as a 63-hectare protected area; it was designated by ministerial decree on 5 December 1944. The pond is visible from the road, but access is private. Check the access status again before visiting, and do not plan the site as an accessible excursion destination.
