Meymac: Discover Culture, Views and Landscapes
Accommodation in Meymac
Culture, views and landscapes give a stay in Meymac a range of different highlights. If you’re looking for a hotel, you could first consider whether to include museums and exhibitions, panoramic views or trails through moorland and lakes in your plans. Make your choice based on what you’d like to experience during your trip.
Culture in the Historic Centre
The Musée d'archéologie et du patrimoine Marius Vazeilles is housed in an 11th-century Benedictine abbey in the historic centre of Meymac. It presents the history of Haute-Corrèze from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum also holds an annual temporary exhibition featuring items from its archaeological or local-history collections. Alongside the broad historical overview, the programme therefore includes changing collection highlights.
Also in the historic centre is the Centre d’art contemporain d’intérêt national, in the south wing of Abbaye Saint-André. The centre has held this national designation since 2022. Another way to discover Meymac’s culture is the “Meymac-près-Bordeaux” exhibition at Espace Gaye-Bordas. It can be visited free of charge and at your own pace during the media library’s opening hours. A guide booklet or audio files, accessible via QR code, are available. As visits are limited to the media library’s opening hours, check them in advance.
Views and Landscapes
The summit of Mont Bessou is at an altitude of 977 metres. A 26-metre-high observation tower stands there, reached by climbing 136 steps. On a clear day, the top offers 360-degree views of the Monts du Cantal, the Sancy and the Monts d’Auvergne, as far as Puy de Dôme. The tower site is accessible via a surfaced forest road. The elevation, steps and far-reaching views give you a clear idea of what makes this viewpoint distinctive.
The Tourbière du Longeyroux is a 250-hectare wetland of European biological importance. It extends across Meymac and the neighbouring communes of Saint-Merd-les-Oussines and Chavanac. The marked Sentier de la Bruyère runs for nine kilometres through the area; the Sentier des Linaigrettes is one kilometre long. The different trail lengths offer a direct comparison when planning your route: the Linaigrettes trail is the shorter option, while the Bruyère trail covers a longer distance. Check trail conditions locally.
From Meymac or Bugeat, you can reach the Tourbière via the D979 and then the D109. This route gives you a guide for the drive, while the two trails offer different distances once you arrive. When planning, you can therefore consider the drive and your preferred trail length separately.
At Lac de Séchemailles
Lac de Séchemailles covers 40 hectares and is surrounded by forest, greenery and sandy beaches. A walking path runs along the lake, with wooden sculptures to see along the way. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with a walk, without the description alone determining the route. You can also explore the lake by canoe or kayak. Seasonal options may vary, so check what is available for your travel dates in advance.
Whether you prefer historical collections, contemporary art, a viewpoint or trails through a wetland, Meymac offers a range of highlights to consider when planning your trip. Use your interests as a starting point when looking for a hotel for your stay.
