Noailles: Heritage, Cave and Causse
Accommodation in Noailles
Noailles brings together architectural history, landscape and nature: the Manoir, the Eglise Assomption de Notre-Dame and the Château de Noailles represent different historical connections. At the Causse de Noailles, there is also an easy hiking trail, viewpoints and a limestone slope designated as a ZNIEFF. The Gouffre de la Fage, in turn, combines stalactite and stalagmite formations, a paleontological deposit and bats. Together with the weekly market, these offer several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.
Heritage from Different Eras
The Manoir in Noailles is an example of regional architecture associated with the Lords of Noailles and reflecting trends of the 16th century. It was listed as a historic monument on 21 December 1977.
The Eglise Assomption de Notre-Dame is a building in the Limousin Romanesque style dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Its choir has been listed as a historic monument since 25 June 1929. The protected status therefore applies specifically to the choir. In comparison, the church is considerably older than the 16th-century trends reflected in the Manoir.
The Château de Noailles is associated with the history of the Dukes of Noailles. Its central structure is flanked by two rectangular towers with machicolations: the Lignérac Tower and the Noailles Tower. The château is privately owned and cannot be visited; check its visitor status again before your trip.
Causse de Noailles: Hiking Trail and Landscape
The Le causse de Noailles hiking trail is 10 kilometres long and rated easy. These details offer two distinct points of reference for planning: the distance indicates the length of the route, while “easy” is its stated difficulty level. The Causse de Noailles also offers numerous viewpoints overlooking the causse itself and the Brive basin.
The limestone slope of La Chaume on the Causse de Noailles is designated as a ZNIEFF and is home to rare and protected species. Built features also shape the causse, including dry-stone walls, a lime kiln, and characteristic houses and barns. Nature and rural architectural heritage are distinct aspects of the landscape here.
The Gouffre de la Fage
The cave is distinguished by beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations and colourful draperies. It also contains a rich paleontological deposit, discovered in 1961. The year refers to the discovery of this deposit. The Gouffre de la Fage is also home to bats. This site therefore brings together cave formations, a paleontological feature and a wildlife habitat.
