Discover Ussac: Hiking, Fountains and Chestnut Culture
Accommodation in Ussac
Ussac can be discovered through several distinct highlights: a marked circular hiking trail, fountains in the village center, the Étang du Griffolet and the Châtaigneraie de Migoule. There is also the Église Saint-Julien, with its distinctive building materials. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these experiences: the « des deux vallées » trail focuses on the loop and a viewpoint, while the Circuit des puits combines a walk with the history of the commune. At the Étang, the focus is on walking and—under certain conditions—fishing; at the Châtaigneraie, chestnut cultivation and natural heritage take center stage. This lets you get a sense of Ussac through the themes that interest you most during your stay.
Hike for the views and discover the fountains
The yellow-marked « des deux vallées » hiking trail is a 7.8-kilometer loop starting at Place de la Mairie. The stated distance and set starting point give you specific information to help you plan your hike. Along the way, there is a viewpoint to the north overlooking the end of the Vézère gorges. The loop thus combines a clearly designated route with a particular landscape view. Check the route details locally before setting out.
The Circuit des puits has a different focus. Ussac created it in partnership with Vézère Ardoise to showcase the commune’s heritage by introducing visitors to its history. As you walk through the village center, you can discover its fountains. Most are visible to walkers, but some are located on private property. This distinction is important for finding your way: the Circuit focuses on the fountains in the village center, but not all of them are equally visible. Unlike the « des deux vallées » trail, no specific distance is given here; the focus is instead on combining a walk with discovering the fountains.
Étang du Griffolet and Châtaigneraie de Migoule
The Étang du Griffolet covers 7 hectares and welcomes families and walkers throughout the year. Fishing is permitted there on designated dates and only for people with a valid fishing license. If you are planning a fishing trip, check the dates before visiting; both the time restriction and the fishing license are conditions. Walking and fishing are therefore different ways to enjoy the Étang.
The Châtaigneraie de Migoule combines a walk with a distinctive history of chestnut cultivation. The commune of Ussac acquired the grove to develop it as a conservatory for a collection of exotic chestnut tree varieties. It is also the only site still preserved in France that bears witness to earlier efforts and initial work to preserve and develop chestnut cultivation. This gives the site a particular historical significance alongside its use as a place for walkers. Benches and picnic tables are available for visitors to the Châtaigneraie.
Architecture and highlights for your stay
The Église Saint-Julien also offers a specific insight into Ussac’s architecture. It is built from rubble stone and dressed red sandstone and roofed with slate from Corrèze. These named materials make its construction a distinct point of interest alongside the commune’s walks, fountains and natural sites.
If you are looking for a hotel in Ussac, you can shape your stay around the themes that appeal to you most: the marked loop and its views of the Vézère gorges, the fountains and history of the village center, or the Châtaigneraie and its chestnut culture. The Étang du Griffolet adds another option: a place for walks and, on designated dates and with a valid fishing license, fishing. These different highlights provide a factual basis for getting to know Ussac as a travel destination.
