Vitrac-Sur-Montane: Memorial, Church and Trails
Accommodation in Vitrac-Sur-Montane
Vitrac-sur-Montane is one of the communes in the Corrèze département included in the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park. The village centre lies above the Montane Valley; the Montane River is one of the local waterways. The A89 crosses the commune on the Lyon–Bordeaux route. This places landscape landmarks alongside a major regional transport route when finding your way around. To decide whether the area is right for your trip, it helps to distinguish between natural features, historic places to visit and opportunities for outdoor activities.
The Memorial on the A89
The Mémorial Corrézien de la Résistance, de la Déportation et des Martyrs is located in Vitrac-sur-Montane at the Aire de Corrèze service area on the A89. From Vitrac-sur-Montane, it can be reached via both the A89 and the D1089. One specific architectural feature is a twelve-metre-high, double-shafted Cross of Lorraine made of Corten steel. For planning your visit, both its location at the Aire de Corrèze and the two named access routes are relevant.
Church, trees and bread oven
The Église Saint-Martin was built in the 12th century as a small Romanesque church; its Renaissance portal is protected by a porch. The Romanesque architectural style and Renaissance portal can thus be seen as distinct architectural features, with the porch protecting the portal. In the church square stand the 200-year-old “Chêne de la liberté” and the 400-year-old “Tilleul de Sully.” Their names and different ages make the two trees easy to distinguish. A restored bread oven near the church is open to visitors.
Leisure activities and trails
The commune has picnic tables, and there is a boules court in the park. The municipal City-Stade has facilities for football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, handball and badminton. The municipal facilities can therefore be distinguished by activity: a dedicated boules court and a City-Stade offering six named sports.
The trails in Vitrac-sur-Montane are open to walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. One specific route is the “Bouysse et autres villages” circular trail. It passes an old chapel, crosses, fountains and bread ovens, and offers views of the Monédières; some sections run through woodland. If you are looking for a named route rather than a single leisure activity, this circular trail provides a clear option.
When choosing a destination, you can weigh up different interests: the memorial and church represent remembrance and architecture, while the circular trail and municipal leisure facilities offer opportunities for exercise and activities. The regional natural park, Montane Valley and river add landscape context to these options.
