Voutezac
Accommodation in Voutezac
The center of Voutezac sits on a rocky promontory and overlooks both the Objat plain and the Vézère Valley. When looking for a hotel in Voutezac, the focus of your trip can help guide your choice: would you like to discover architectural history, go hiking, or make activities on and along the Vézère the main focus?
Townscape and landscape
The location of the town center gives Voutezac a character shaped by its surroundings: from the rocky promontory, the view takes in two distinct landscapes, the Objat plain and the Vézère Valley. The area also includes Voutezac’s Côteaux fleuris, with their flowering peach orchards. They add a seasonal feature to the landscape.
Chant d’Ardoise is another distinctive feature of the area: the winery produces red, white and rosé wines from vines growing on terraces overlooking Le Saillant and the Vézère.
Church, bridge and stained-glass windows
The Church of Saint-Christophe was built in the 10th century. The Pont du Saillant represents a different era: this 16th-century bridge crosses the Vézère and has six pointed arches. Together, the church and bridge make two distinct historic structures part of the Voutezac experience.
For art lovers, the Chapelle du Saillant is a special point of interest. It is the only chapel in France whose entire interior is decorated with stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall. The six windows were made between 1978 and 1982 by Charles Marq and Brigitte Simon, based on designs by Marc Chagall. The account distinguishes between the designs and the later creation of the windows.
Hiking and cycling
For a hike with a specified difficulty level and duration, the La fontaine des Crozes route offers a useful guide: it is described as a difficult, 12-kilometer hike lasting 3 hours and 15 minutes. The trail passes through the Vaysse gorges, where the Fontaine des Crozes is hidden. It also includes the ruins of Patel, the remains of a former monastery. This route brings together landscape and historic remains in a clearly defined hiking itinerary.
The Voie verte Vézère offers a different kind of route. It runs between the Le Saillant dam and Garavet, is 10.7 kilometers long, and passes through a Natura 2000 area along the Vézère. It is designated for road cycling, hiking, touring cycling and mountain biking. By comparison, La fontaine des Crozes is explicitly described as a difficult hike with a set duration; the Voie verte lists several types of use and its route length. These details provide different information for planning without treating the routes as equivalent.
Activities on the Vézère
The Base Sports Loisirs Vézère is located in Voutezac and offers more than twenty outdoor activities. Canoe and kayak trips on the Vézère cover routes of 4 or 8 kilometers. The boats can be used solo or by families, with up to three people per canoe. The base also has a pump track, which is open to visitors.
Rafting on the Vézère is available on request throughout the year, depending on water levels. This condition is important for planning: unlike an activity that is generally available, this option depends on the water level and must be requested.
Hydroelectric power station and visitor experiences
At the Site Hydroélectrique EDF du Saillant, a viewing window offers a look at the turbines in operation. Two marked walking trails run along the banks of the Vézère and approach the hydroelectric power station and dam. In addition, guided tours of the site are offered by the Pays d’Art et d’Histoire in July and August. The viewing window, trails and guided tours offer different ways to explore the site and the hydroelectric facility.
A July event and wine from terraced vineyards
The Fête de la pêche de Voutezac takes place in July. If the festival is the reason for your trip, July is the relevant time to visit. Chant d’Ardoise adds another local connection: its red, white and rosé wines come from vines on terraces overlooking Le Saillant and the Vézère.
