La Cellette: Architectural History, Trails and Heritage
Accommodation in La Cellette
When looking for a hotel for a stay in La Cellette, buildings, historic landmarks and hiking trails may influence your choice of destination. The local highlights range from a church in the late Romanesque style to a rock shelter that once served as a refuge for charcoal burners. Two hiking routes add specific distances and approximate durations to these themes. There is also a Tèrra-Aventura treasure hunt that runs through La Cellette and Tercillat.
Architectural History and Historic Landmarks
The Église Saint-Avit is a single-nave building in the late Romanesque style. The term “single-nave” describes a floor plan with just one nave and, together with the style classification, offers a specific introduction to the building’s history. Le Château is a bourgeois residence dating from the mid-18th century. Today it houses the Auberge des Voyageurs restaurant; this use may change.
The Maison du Petit Poucet is a rock shelter in La Garenne. It once served as a refuge for charcoal burners. The croix du cimetière is a granite cross at the entrance to the cemetery, adorned with a primitive depiction of Christ and set on an octagonal base. It is believed to date from the 15th century. The shelter and the cross thus represent different historical connections: a former use as a place of refuge and a monument whose origins are dated with some uncertainty.
The Moulin de La Cellette is a privately owned grain mill. At the Atelier l’Églantier, Marie-Louise is a painter and Rob is a stone sculptor. The mill and the atelier add two further themes to the buildings: grain mills, and painting and stone sculpture.
A stele in La Cellette commemorates the crash of a Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress” on 6 February 1945. Alongside the church, residence and cross, it offers a different historical perspective: the memory of a specific event from the 20th century.
Hiking Trails and Treasure Hunt
For planning purposes, the two routes can be compared by distance and stated duration. The La Garenne LC1 circular trail is 5 km long and passes through meadows and forests along historic pilgrim and stonemasons’ paths. LC2 La Gasne aux Vieilles is 11 km long, takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and starts at Place du 8 mai 1945 in La Cellette. This route also passes through meadows and forests and follows pilgrim paths. Compared directly, LC1 is the shorter route, while an approximate duration is also provided for LC2.
The Tèrra-Aventura treasure hunt “Et la bobinette cherra…” runs through La Cellette and Tercillat. It combines outdoor walks with discovering heritage sites in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its focus differs from that of the hiking trails, which have specific route lengths: here, outdoor activity and heritage are brought together. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer a hike with a stated distance or this combination of a walk and a treasure hunt.
