For a stay in Pionnat, it is easy to distinguish between cultural and natural attractions: the Church of Saint-Martin-de-Tours represents medieval architecture, while the Les berges de la Creuse route connects the town centre with the Viaduc de Busseau. There are also archaeological sites, hiking options and a fishing stretch.

Church, art and history

The Church of Saint-Martin-de-Tours in Pionnat dates from the second half of the 13th century. Its west façade is built of regularly laid granite masonry, and its portal has a pointed arch. A rectangular chapel was added to the north wall in the 14th century; its seigneurial character is considered likely. The church therefore reveals several building phases, and the later chapel should not be confused with the original structure.

The church contains four choir stalls and a reliquary bust of Saint Dulcardus. The choir stalls were protected as movable historic objects on 14 November 1991. The arm reliquary of Saint Eutropius, by contrast, is a 15th-century object from the Célestiner priory of Les Ternes in Pionnat, now kept in Guéret. It was protected as a movable historic object on 30 October 1914.

The Ancienne abbaye des Ternes is also part of Pionnat’s history: the former monastery was founded in the 14th century for the Celestine congregation. Two convent wings arranged in an L shape, an entrance portal flanked by two small towers, and a former bakery remain from the complex. It is privately owned. The same is true of the Oppidum de Châteauvieux, an archaeological site in the hamlet of Châteauvieux that has been protected as a historic monument since 1984. Ménardeix is also home to the Neolithic dolmen and menhir no. 2 of Pierre Fade.

Trails along the Creuse and hikes

The Viaduc de Busseau-sur-Creuse was built between 1863 and 1865 and lies partly within the municipality of Pionnat. The Les berges de la Creuse route runs from the town centre to the viaduct, following the right bank of the Creuse. GPX and KML files are available to help you navigate this route; they can be transferred to a GPS device or other navigation device.

RANDO PIONNAT offers hikes from 6 to 15 kilometres, with varying levels of difficulty. A municipal association website from 2022–2023 lists at least two to three hikes per month in and around Pionnat. It also mentions individual outings combined with a picnic, restaurant visit or other activities. As the programme may change, check the latest dates and formats before travelling.

Plan for fishing and the market

The Le Moulin du Breuil fishing stretch near Pionnat is a 600-metre recreational trout-fishing course in the second category. If you would like to fish there, check the current rules and access arrangements in advance, as both may change.

Pionnat’s market takes place on the first and third Friday of each month. Plan your visit around the appropriate date and check the current market day before travelling. This lets you consider hikes, a market visit and cultural attractions separately when planning your stay, rather than relying on a single activity.
